San Diego International Airport (SAN) finally reached a post-pandemic milestone in October 2023, recording an increase in passenger volumes versus the same period in 2019. Additionally, the airport has had a 3% increase in passengers in 2023 compared to last year.

Recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic

While many larger airports globally have already rebounded fully from the COVID-19 pandemic and have resumed passenger volume growth, some smaller airports have not had the same recovery. This is the case of San Diego International, the third-largest airport in California by weekly departures and seats available (behind the behemoths Los Angeles –LAX– and San Francisco –SFO–).

The airport has been trailing versus pre-pandemic numbers for the last three years. However, it seems the worst is behind. During October, the airport reached a post-pandemic milestone when approximately 6,000 more people traveled through the Transportation Security Administration’s (TSA) checkpoints compared to the same month in 2019.
