Frontier Airlines has announced an expansion of its route network from several airports nationwide. Originally, the airline stated that it would launch flights from New York to Los Angeles, but it issued a correction to its press release and will not fly the route.

New route? Maybe not…

Frontier Airlines is one of the biggest ultra-low-cost carriers in the United States. In recent months, the airline has announced several expansions and is hoping to increase its foothold in American aviation. In the last two years, Frontier has opened new crew bases and also increased its fleet, and almost merged with Spirit Airlines.

Yesterday, Frontier announced its latest expansion, which caught the eye of many in the aviation industry. The announcement said that Frontier would launch a new route from John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York to Los Angeles International Airport, the busiest transcontinental route in the country. A new route from JFK to Harry Reid International Airport (LAS) was also included in the announcement and both routes were supposed to launch of the same day.

It turns out, Frontier will not be launching the route from JFK to LAX on August 13. The airline quickly issued a correction to its press release and removed the LAX route, but kept the flight to LAS. The route to LAS will operate daily from August 13 and fares start at $69 one-way.

If Frontier launched flights from JFK to LAX, it would become the fourth airline serving the route, joining Delta Air Lines, American Airlines, and JetBlue. Between those three airlines, there are 1,638 roundtrip flights between the two airports this month. Delta has the largest market share, flying up to ten daily flights (one-way). Frontier would set itself apart from the other three with its low-fares, which according to its press release, would have started at $69 one-way.

Additional routes

All the new routes announced yesterday will be launched in August, from nine airports across the US. Expanding in California, Frontier is rivaling Southwest Airlines and other carriers that fly between LAX and Sacramento, and Sacramento and San Diego. Both new routes from Sacramento International Airport, to LAX and San Diego International Airport (SAN) start at $19 one-way and will be flown daily.

Competing with Delta Air Lines, Frontier will also launch a nonstop flight to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, Delta’s largest hub. This route will also be flown once daily and fares start at $59 one-way. From Boston Logan International Airport, another Delta hub, Frontier is launching three new routes. The flights from Boston to Atlanta and to Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) will launch on August 13 and operate daily. The following day, Frontier will launch flights to Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), but those will only operate four times weekly.
