Summary

  • Air Canada is the US’s number one foreign operator, with 200 daily departures and 95 airport pairs.
  • Three European airlines feature in the top 10, two of which have introduced new US routes recently.
  • The third-largest carrier, Volaris, will begin McAllen-Cancun on July 3, the day of writing.

The peak summer has arrived. Examining Cirium data shows that approximately 100 foreign passenger airlines will serve the US between July and September. Between them, they will have an average of 1,120 daily departures (double to include arrivals) and operate nearly one in two of the country’s international services (47%).

The US’s top foreign operators

The following table summarizes them. Air Canada is, of course, number one. It has an average of 200 daily US flights (each way) in the three summer months, and its network comprises 95 airport pairs. When all US and foreign airlines are combined, it has about one in every 12 international departures.

But that is not the end of its changes.

These figures are for the three months; they will vary at other times. Daily services are averaged (flights/92 days), with half of the days having more and half having fewer. For fairness and consistency, all units of each airline are combined. Airport pairs are non-stop only to avoid double counting.

  • In June, Copa inaugurated Panama City-Raleigh Durham.
  • In that same month, Lufthansa started Frankfurt-Minneapolis and Raleigh Durham (which built on Munich-Seattle in May), and Porter commenced Los Angeles and San Francisco from Montreal (which followed Toronto-Las Vegas in March).
  • At the start of July, Aeromexico began flying to Raleigh Durham and Tampa for the first time, while it returned to Washington Dulles after six years and reinstated Mexico City-Salt Lake City.

What is happening before September?

When the same 10 airlines’ schedules are examined for July-September, only one new route is still to begin. On September 16, WestJet will introduce Winnipeg to Nashville twice-weekly on the Boeing 737 MAX 8. It will operate until November 15 with just 18 roundtrip flights.
