The Caribbean aviation sector is hotter than ever: new flights, new routes and new-entry airlines have turned what was a quiet, lethargic sector into a competitive intra-regional market.
The Caribbean, which in the wake of LIAT’s demise was largely devoid of any notable competition, has seen more and more airlines adding intra-regional flights, from JetBlue to Frontier (which just opened a crew base in San Juan and has been adding routes around the region, most recently to Barbados).
That also includes a regional standard-bearer: Caribbean Airlines, which has itself been adding a host of new routes across the region.
The latest? A first for the Trinidad-based carrier: nonstop service to Puerto Rico.
This week, Caribbean Airlines inaugurated its first-ever flight between Trinidad and San Juan, part of what the company called a “strategic plan to enhance connectivity within the Caribbean region.”
Flights are operating three times per week, with service on Sundays, Tuesdays and Fridays.
“We are excited to expand our route network to include San Juan, Puerto Rico. This new route is a significant step in our growth strategy and underscores our commitment to enhancing regional connectivity,” said Caribbean Airlines CEO of Caribbean Airlines. “Caribbean Airlines plays a vital role in connecting the Caribbean, and by the end of this year, we will link the Spanish, French, Dutch and English-speaking Caribbean with each other, the North American Diaspora, and business and leisure travelers, as we Welcome them Home, to explore our beautiful region.”
