Summary

  • Charlotte has 187 passenger destinations in August 2024.
  • It follows the start of the first-ever Québec City flights.
  • It is one of eight brand-new destinations for the airport this year, including three in Canada.

Charlotte is the world’s fifth-busiest airport by flights. On a typical August day, 775 scheduled passenger flights take off (double for both ways), based on analyzing Cirium schedules data. As this is an average, half of the days will have more departures, and half will have fewer. American Airlines and its regional unit, American Eagle, account for 87% of services. Charlotte is among the world’s most extreme fortress hubs.

Gains 187th destination in August

Charlotte had 186 non-stop destinations until August 9. It jumped to 187 on August 10 with the launch of the airport’s first-ever flights to Québec City. The North Carolina hub is now linked non-stop to a record five Canadian cities. Until 2023, no more than two were served.

Québec City’s arrival joins Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, and Calgary. Charlotte’s first-ever Vancouver flights began on June 5 (operated by American), followed by the first Calgary service three days later (same carrier).

The 817 nautical mile (1,514 km) Québec City route runs on Saturdays only, with the last departure on November 2. There will be just 13 roundtrip flights this year, all on the two-class, 74-seat CRJ900 operated by PSA Airlines for American Eagle. Its August schedule is as follows, with all times local:

  • Charlotte to Québec City: AA5223, 09:00-11:49 (2h 49m)
  • Québec City to Charlotte: AA5223 (same number back), 12:29-15:14 (2h 45m)

Charlotte’s joint-longest RJ route

Recall Québec City’s distance: 817 nautical miles (1,514 km). As unbelievable as it is, this is the exact same distance as Charlotte-Oklahoma City on a Great Circle basis. As usual, real-world operations may change this.

Naturally, Charlotte-Oklahoma City is served much more frequently, with mainline and RJs used. Regarding RJs, it is weekly in August but usually daily or eight weekly from September, all on the CRJ900.

American Eagle CRJ900

When August max block time is considered, Québec City is tied with Oklahoma City at two 2h 49m. No matter how you think about it, that is a long time on an RJ, even aboard relatively large-capacity examples like the CRJ900.

Charlotte’s new destinations in 2024

Schedule analysis for 2004-2024 indicates that eight destinations have joined, or will join, Charlotte’s route map this year. None have had flights from the airport before. When cuts are considered, Charlotte has lost 21 destinations since 2020.
