Collision over the Grand Canyon

From Air Disaster:

From Season 12 Episode 6 “Grand Canyon Disaster”: Just after 9:00 AM United Airlines Flight 718 takes off from Los Angeles International Airport with 53 passengers on board.

With only 117 commercial flights in the entire state of California each day, air travel is a luxury enjoyed by the wealthy few. After liftoff, the crew is required to fly an assigned flight path through the airspace around Los Angeles.

After that, they are free to fly wherever they want, as long as they report crossing a number of waypoints along their route. In 1956, there is no radar coverage to keep track of airliners. These reports will allow Air Traffic Controllers to track the plane’s movements.
