United Airlines has unveiled its new check-in area at Miami International Airport (MIA), highlighting the carrier’s commitment to enhance the overall travel experience for its passengers.

The area was officially opened on August 29th, 2024, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by representatives from both the airport and the airline. Among the attendees were the CEO and Director of Miami International Airport, Ralph Cutié, and United Airlines’ Miami General Manager, Hector Araujo.

Bag Drop Shortcut now available

In addition to ten new ticket counters, 13 self-service kiosks, updated signage, United Airlines’ new check-in area at Miami International Airport also includes the airline’s innovative Bag Drop Shortcut, a time-saving feature that has been integrated into the carrier’s mobile app.

This gives passengers the opportunity to check their bags using the app before they reach the airport, allowing them to skip the lines at the traditional check-in desks and drop their bags directly at the Bag Drop Shortcut area. Miami International Airport is among the first 20 airports nationwide to offer this service.

United Airlines at Miami International Airport

Although Miami International Airport is not a hub for United Airlines, the carrier still has a sizeable presence at the facility, linking South Florida with its hubs across the country. Data from Cirium, an aviation analytics company, shows that in September 2024, United Airlines will operate more than 700 flights to and from Miami International Airport. This includes the following routes:

  • Denver (DEN) – Miami (MIA): 35 flights each way
  • Newark (EWR) – Miami (MIA): 142 flights each way
  • Washington (IAD) – Miami (MIA): 90 flights each way
  • Houston (IAH) – Miami (MIA): 89 flights each way
  • Chicago (ORD) – Miami (MIA): 35 flights each way
  • San Francisco (SFO) – Miami (MIA): 30 flights each way.

Last year, Miami International Airport saw more than 53 million passengers, and United Airlines had a 5.6% market share at the airport, making it the fifth-largest carrier there. By far the largest carrier was American Airlines (with a 57.3% market share), followed by Delta Air Lines (10.9%), Spirit Airlines (7.8%), and Southwest Airlines (5.7%).

All of United Airlines’ flights to and from Miami International Airport are operated by narrowbody aircraft, namely the Boeing 757-200, 737-800, 737-900, 737 MAX 8, and 737 MAX 9.
