5 Ways To Earn Extra Alaska Airlines Miles This Fall

As Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines enter the next phase of the merger, Alaska Mileage Plan members can now transfer earned miles to Hawaiian. We look at several ways that Alaska Airlines miles can be earned.

1

Flying with Alaska Airlines

Miles are earned based on the distance flown

  • Saver fares earn 30% of flown miles
  • Bonus miles of up to 100% are awarded in some classes and routes
  • MVP members earn an additional miles bonus of up to 150%

It remains the simplest way to earn miles with Alaska Airlines. The miles are generally awarded based on the distance flown with the airline. Apart from Saver fares on Alaska flights, all other classes of travel receive 100% of the miles based on distance. Members flying with Saver fares earn 30% of the miles flown. Alaska Airlines also offers miles bonuses on some classes and routes.

For example, Economy passengers on some routes may earn up to 50% bonus miles (depending on the fare), while First class passengers may earn up to 100% bonus miles. Moreover, Alaska MVP status members earn an additional bonus, anywhere between 50% and 150%, depending on the elite status. Now that Alaska Airlines miles can be transferred to Hawaiian Airlines, members have another way of redeeming their Alaska miles at Hawaiian.

Flying with Alaska Airlines partners

American Airlines 25%
British Airways 25%
Cathay Pacific 25%
Japan Airlines 30%
Malaysia Airlines 25%
Qantas 25%
Qatar Airways 25%

Alaska Airlines is part of the oneworld Alliance, making it part of a wider network of 13 airlines. Moreover, Alaska Airlines also partners with other non-oneworld network airlines that enable members to earn and redeem loyalty benefits. With a partner network of over 25 airlines, Alaska Airlines members can earn miles when traveling on any partner airlines.

Miles earned on partner airlines range from 25% to 100% of the miles flown. While this may seem less attractive than flying directly with Alaska, several partner airlines offer 100% of miles flown. Similarly, upper-class travel on some partner airlines may earn double or even more miles flown.

Use of credit cards

Direct earning or mile-transferable credit cards

  • Alaska Airlines Visa Signature Card: Annual fee of $95
  • Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant American Express Card: Annual fee of $650
  • Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Card: Annual fee of $95
  • Marriott Bonvoy. Bold Card: Annual fee of $50
  • Marriot Business American Express Card: Annual fee of $125

Use of an Alaska Airlines co-branded credit card is one of the easiest (and maybe quickest) ways to earn Alaska Airlines miles. With an annual fee of just $95 and a variety of bonus offers, the Alaska Airlines Visa Signature Card is considered among the best co-branded cards. Credit card purchases are awarded three miles per $1 spent with Alaska Airlines, two miles per $1 with eligible gas and other select purchases, and one mile per $1 with everything else.

Another way to earn Alaska miles through credit cards is by using one of several Marriott Bonvoy cards. The catch is that Bonvoy rewards are transferred to Alaska miles at a 3:1 ratio (three Bonvoy points equal one Alaska Airlines mile). While it is not the best miles-earning option, it may be sufficient to supplement some miles for redemption.
