Thales has announced a new upgrade to its Talios laser designation pod, specifically designed for Dassault Aviation’s Rafale fighter jets. This enhancement introduces artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities to the pod, enabling real-time onboard image analysis that improves the speed and accuracy of object detection while reducing cognitive workload for pilots.

The AI integration, powered by Thales’ cortAIx accelerator, processes airborne imagery up to 100 times faster than previous models. Thales eliminates the need for external data links by embedding this capability directly into the pod, ensuring secure and uninterrupted operation in complex combat scenarios. This advancement is set to debut with the arrival of the Rafale standard F4.3 in 2026.

One of the key improvements of the Talios pod is its ability to pre-select objects of interest using AI. This feature assists pilots by highlighting relevant information for decision-making, while preserving their autonomy in critical engagement situations. Developed in collaboration with operational personnel, the system was trained on classified imagery databases to ensure its reliability during missions.
