Copa Airlines has announced a historic expansion of its operations in El Salvador, a testament to the country’s ongoing economic growth under President Nayib Bukele’s administration. The airline has increased its weekly frequencies from 14 to 25 in 2024, marking a significant milestone for the airline in the region.
Michael Wehmeyer, General Manager for North Central America at Copa Airlines, attributed this surge in activity to the growing tourism and economic development in El Salvador. He highlighted that the airline’s core clientele includes the growing Salvadoran diaspora and corporate clients, many of whom have set up headquarters in the country due to its favorable business climate.
«We have been consistently growing in El Salvador, and this year has been an ideal time to continue that trend. The investment we’ve made in the country has paid off, and we’re now seeing the highest number of frequencies since we began operations here in 1971,» Wehmeyer stated.
He further emphasized that the country’s economic prosperity has contributed to enhanced air connectivity, facilitating investments and offering exciting opportunities for both Copa Airlines and El Salvador. With four daily flights, the airline provides «perfect connectivity» to its vast network of 85 destinations across 32 countries in the Americas.
Looking ahead, Copa Airlines plans to continue its growth trajectory, with the addition of more Boeing aircraft in the coming year. Wehmeyer also noted the airline’s collaboration with the administration of El Salvador’s International Airport, underscoring the shared goal of fostering joint growth.
In a further sign of confidence in the country, Copa Airlines has partnered with Encore Corporate Travel, a leader in corporate travel management solutions, which recently opened operations in El Salvador. «The establishment of Encore’s hub here is unprecedented and reflects the warmth and welcoming environment they found in the country,» Wehmeyer added.
Copa Airlines’ growth in El Salvador reflects the broader success story of the country’s economic transformation, positioning it as a key player in the region’s air connectivity.
