Porter Airlines Launches Flights to Palm Springs and San Diego

This week, Porter Airlines
is launching two new nonstop routes, expanding its leisure-oriented network with new flights from its principal hub at Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) to San Diego International Airport (SAN) and Palm Springs International Airport (PSP). Both of these facilities see extensive traffic from vacationers, especially during the winter months when travelers from places like Canada look to take advantage of the warm Southern California weather.

These new routes will offer passengers a seamless travel experience to two of the best winter vacation destinations on the West Coast and will come along with Porter’s trademark elevated passenger experience, even while flying economy class. The first flight to San Diego took off earlier today, with the carrier set to offer four weekly flights on this new year-round service, which demonstrates the airline’s expectations that travel demand to Southern California will remain strong even in lower-traffic summer months.

The second flight, a seasonal service to Palm Springs, is set to take off later this week, with three weekly departures from Toronto for passengers to choose from. This service will provide Canadians with a direct link to the endless sunshine, desert landscapes, and recreational activities available in Palm Springs. Furthermore, with nearby music festivals like Coachella coming up, this flight will offer Canadians a more convenient travel option than ever before. Both flights will be operated by the airline’s E195-E2 aircraft.

An exciting announcement for Porter

Unsurprisingly, Porter Airlines is excited by the launch of these new nonstop flights, as are the two airports that will be welcoming the new services. In a statement regarding the route’s launch, Edmond Eldebs, the airline’s senior vice president and chief commercial officer, had the following words to share regarding the announcement:

“Expanding into more destinations in Southern California is part of our commitment to provide more options to our passengers. We are proud to offer passengers the convenience of non-stop connections and the comfort of Porter’s elevated economy experience.”

Airport administrative officials at both San Diego Airport and Palm Springs Airport also relayed their excitement over the new flights. The president and CEO of the San Diego Regional Airport Authority, Kimberly Becker, noted that she was excited about connecting San Diego residents to Toronto, a city that is increasingly becoming a hub for business, finance, arts and culture.

Harry Barret Jr., the executive director of Palm Springs Airport, noted his excitement that Porter would be bringing its elevated passenger experience to the facility. Last year, over 50,000 passengers traveled between Palm Springs and Toronto via a stopover somewhere along the way. Now, these travelers will have a convenient nonstop option.

So what’s the bottom line here?

This latest move from Porter Airlines falls in line with many of the airline’s recent network expansions, many of which have increased service to leisure-oriented destinations in the United States. For example, the carrier announced new flights to multiple destinations in the Southeastern United States this past summer.

The airline has the opportunity to capitalize on a new market in need of a nonstop flight, but can also continue to build out its connectivity at Toronto Pearson. The airline can now provide convenient one-stop itineraries to Palm Springs from destinations across Eastern Canada.
