Aircraft take off and depart worldwide every few seconds. Each has its own captivating livery, which can be a home comfort for frequent travelers. While many airlines use the outside of their aircraft to lure in passengers with creative color schemes, one that stands out for being among the most profound is Spirit Airlines‘ bright yellow livery.

A flying banana: Spirit Airlines and its yellow livery

Color preference is subjective, and, while there are plenty of airlines with less awakening colors, Spirit Airlines

certainly stands out in a crowd of lined-up aircraft at some of the United States’ busiest airports. The airline, which previously operated a more streamlined, white, blue, and red livery with a colorful ‘S’ on its tail, or the silver and black pixel design, decided to change its look in recent years to the bright yellow we know today.

Airlines worldwide use their fuselage as a marketing tool for passengers, such as the iconic easyJet phone number painted on its aircraft in Europe and Air New Zealand’s livery featuring Lord of the Rings depictions. Each airline is different, and each carrier thinks its livery is the best in the show.

Spirit Airlines is based in Dania Beach, Florida, which is part of the Miami metropolitan area. The airline operates scheduled flights across the United States, Caribbean, and Latin America. The largest ultra-low-cost carrier in North America has struggled with financial liquidity recently and filed for bankruptcy in November last year.

The airline started as Clippert Trucking Company in 1964 before it changed its name to Ground Air Transfer, where its airline service was born. Led by Ned Homfeld, the airline eventually became Charter One Airlines, which operated tour packages from Detroit to tourist destinations, including the Bahamas, Las Vegas, and Atlantic City

Spirit Airlines Files For Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Protection

Spirit Airlines has announced that it has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, assuring passengers that its services will continue during the process.

A look back at the unique liveries of Spirit Airlines

Spirit Airlines has always been a carrier that looks to turn heads, and the liveries are no different. Spirit has a unique business model, where it offers the ‘bare basic,’ as a ultra-low-cost-carrier. Passengers pay for additional onboard services, such as carry-on baggage, meals, and seat selection.

Of its last three liveries, the black ‘pixel’ livery aimed to attract a ‘low fare’ message and entice passengers to take flight with its unique ultra-low-cost model. While it didn’t stick around for long, it was undoubtedly the most enjoyable to look at compared to the next two.

Bright blue and neon accent colors were introduced as the carrier looked further to cement itself as a leading ultra-low-cost carrier in America, and many thought it was a huge step down from its modern-looking ‘pixel’ livery that was before it.

Looking for attention at the airport, a bright yellow aircraft was sure to achieve that. Spirit decided to go all yellow to ensure itself was the center of attention on the apron. The best marketing campaign of all, the airline definitely succeeded in brand recognition and remains one of the most recognizable aircraft liveries in North America.

Much more is behind the bright yellow color scheme of Spirit Airlines

Despite Spirit Airlines’ current financial situation, the airline is committed to improving its guest experience. New premium offerings, named ‘Go,’ were launched for the first time last year. The move for the airline looked to provide cost-effective travel for a broader range of customers. The airline has four fare classes:

  • Go Big

    • A Big Front Seat.
    • One checked bag.
    • One carry-on bag.
    • Priority check-in and boarding.
    • Complementary onboard snacks and drinks, including alcoholic beverages.
    • Streaming access.
  • Go Comfy

    • Aisle or window seat.
    • Guaranteed blocked middle seat.
    • One checked bag.
    • One carry-on bag.
    • Priority boarding.
    • Complementary onboard snacks and non-alcoholic drinks.
  • Go Savvy

    • Standard seat selection.
    • One checked bag.
    • One carry-on bag.
  • Go

    • Seat only.
    • One personal item allowed onboard.
    • Additional fees for checked or carry-on baggage and paid seat selection.

Major investments, including its new Go Big seats, are available to book, and the airline’s President and Chief Executive, Ted Christie, reminded that the airline isn’t just for budget travelers, as shared by PRNewswire:

“We are making major investments to provide our guests with greater value and enhance their travel experience. This is an excellent opportunity for new guests and those who haven’t flown with us recently to experience our transformation and see for themselves the great value they can enjoy when choosing Spirit.”

Which Spirit Airlines Planes Have Or Have Had Special Liveries?

Spirit Airlines uses liveries to celebrate with passengers and partners.

Revisiting Spirit Airlines’ move to all-yellow aircraft

Back in 2014, Spirit Airlines decided to make the big jump to all yellow aircraft, which followed quickly after its two biggest competitors on home soil, Denver-based Frontier Airlines, and Dallas-based Southwest Airlines.

Spirit looked for designs that would fit its young, low-fare culture. The design was described as delivering a bold message paired with a bright and memorable design. Spirit is known for not spending excessive amounts of money on marketing, so having its own bright yellow flying billboard was a way to capture attention at no additional cost.

Using bright yellow as an attention-grabbing point of difference, the airline found a way to make sure it was first and foremost in people’s minds when it came to booking travel, and it showed the airline was willing to be radically different from any other carrier. To begin with, Spirit only introduced the bright new livery on its newer aircraft. Now, however, most of its fleet are all in the uniform color, except those with additional decals as part of commercial partnerships.

For airlines, a simple two-tone design can ensure lower repainting times and overall maintenance costs compared to other more detailed aircraft liveries. Simplifying the airline’s brand message was made loud and clear with the move to yellow, and Spirit reaped the rewards for many years of its unique point of difference. Frequent passengers onboard Spirit can earn frequent flier miles through its Free Spirit program.

Dodging bullets on approach to Toussaint Louverture International Airport
