Emirates has officially become the world’s first Autism Certified Airline™, offering comprehensive services to customers with autism spectrum and sensory sensitivities. The certification, awarded by the International Board for Qualifications and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES), will be formally presented in the coming months after over 30,000 Emirates cabin and ground crew complete their initial training.
Travel Accessible to All
For individuals on the autism spectrum, air travel often presents significant challenges due to heightened sensory input. A survey by AutismTravel.com revealed that 78% of families are hesitant to travel or visit new places, while 94% would vacation more frequently if autism-specific training and certification were available.
Driven by its commitment to inclusivity, Emirates partnered with IBCCES to conduct an on-site review and audit. IBCCES, a leading provider of autism and neurodiversity training, surveyed over 14,000 individuals with disabilities, including those on the autism spectrum, and collaborated with industry experts and the International Air Transport Association (IATA) to establish favorable standards for both passengers and staff. Experts also conducted audits on Emirates flights across short-haul and long-haul routes.
Autism and Sensory Awareness Training
As part of this initiative, Emirates’ ground and cabin crew are undergoing specialized training to better understand the needs of passengers with autism. The training includes:
- Understanding the autism spectrum
- Addressing misconceptions and challenges
- Recognizing individual needs and potential triggers
This builds on the “Introduction to Autism and Hidden Disabilities” program completed by 23,000 Emirates employees in 2023, further enhancing the airline’s efforts to create a welcoming and supportive travel experience for all passengers.
