Aeromexico Rewards is one of the largest loyalty programs in Central America, and its affiliations make it particularly valuable. From complimentary upgrades on Delta Air Lines and Aeromexico to dynamic and fixed pricing redemptions, there are plenty of benefits to the program. Here are some of the hidden benefits you should know about if you join.

Partnership with Delta

One of the most coveted benefits of the big three US airlines is the ability to waitlist for complimentary upgrades on regional flights. Aeromexico Rewards members receive the same benefits when flying with Delta, with your tier (Gold, Platinum, or Titanium) determining when your upgrade could clear (24/72/120 hours). Of course, members are also listed for upgrades to Aeromexico Premier Class (business), with these clearing 24/72/120 hours before takeoff for each tier.

Delta owns 20% of Aeromexico, making their joint venture quite comprehensive. You’ll get baggage benefits, priority check-in, and security, and Sky Club access when flying in business out of the US. If the recent Delta SkyMiles changes have suddenly made the program a no-go for you, Aeromexico may not be a bad way to remain in the fold.

Plenty of redemptions

While airlines globally are moving to dynamic pricing for award tickets, with Delta leading the charge, so has Aeromexico. Sort of. Indeed, the program runs a two-tier award system, with both a fixed chart and a dynamic portal for members to choose from. This allows there to be plenty of availability at higher mile prices, and during peak dates, but also a way for value consumers to redeem their miles.

It’s a novel approach and a good way to keep all members of the program happy. Sadly, tickets won’t run you cheap, even on the fixed chart. While domestic flights start at only 10,000 miles, a one-way in business class to Europe will cost a massive 202,000 miles. This might look very expensive, but considering the co-brand partnership Aeromexico Rewards has, and the 1:1.6 transfer ratio from American Express, these aren’t the priciest (that would still be Delta).

SkyTeam partner awards cost slightly more but open up several more carriers to book with, especially outside the continent. Remember that peak-season and off-peak pricing can also apply, so carefully look at the chart before transferring over any points.

Lounge access

While you don’t have any special access to Delta’s Sky Clubs (only as a SkyTeam Elite Plus member if you’re Platinum or Titanium), Aeromexico opens the doors to its Salones Premier lounges around the globe, along with one or two guests. However, your SkyTeam status means that you’re likely to find a lounge at any global hub, from Dubai to Seoul, without much trouble. Don’t forget that credit cards come with their own access rules as well.

Overall, Aeromexico Rewards is a compelling program for anyone who flies heavily to the US or to SkyTeam hubs. Given the lower qualification requirements, compared to Delta at least, this program might be a favorite for many flocking away in the future, as it as for so many in Mexico itself.
