Minutes after a sizeable order by Emirates, Boeing reported another widebody deal at Dubai Airshow 2023, with flydubai announcing the purchase of 30 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners.

This marks the entry of the Dubai-based airline into widebody aircraft operations. The deal aims to open new international routes and increase capacity on existing ones.

“In 2008 when we placed our first-ever order for 50 Boeing 737 aircraft, we were confident of the vital role flydubai would play in supporting Dubai’s aviation hub,” said His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of flydubai. “The highly fuel-efficient Boeing 787 Dreamliner will allow flydubai to expand its horizon and cater to the growing demand on existing routes.”

Since its launch supported by Emirates, flydubai has operated a single-type fleet of Boeing 737 narrowbody aircraft.

This new order reflects the growing demand for air travel in the region. According to Boeing forecasts, the Middle East’s aircraft fleet is expected to more than double over the next 20 years, with half of these airliners forecasted to be widebody.

By introducing widebody aircraft into its fleet, flydubai aims to capture a more significant share of the international market, attract a broader range of passengers, and enhance its existing routes.
