This has been nearly a decade in the making.

Minnesota-based Sun Country Airlines just recently announced the addition of a common customer experience travelers expect and often take for granted with most U.S. airlines.

After going nearly seven years without a mobile app for the smartphones of their patrons, Sun Country announced they’ve finally made their new mobile app available to customers for both iPhone and Android-based smartphones.

The airline was keenly aware that a mobile app is something they were sorely missing, admitting travelers expect it in a 2023 story about the pending launch of their app. While they originally anticipated releasing the app in late 2023 or early 2024, the app hit smartphone app stores in late May.

Even the company uses the word “finally” in their website announcement.

The airline had previously had a mobile app as far back as 2017, when the company decided to discontinue its app in favor of investing in other technologies and parts of its business, encouraging travelers to use its website.

As someone who has flown Sun Country a number of times recently, I’ll admit that their website experience wasn’t a bad one. I’ve written before about how I’ve generally enjoyed my experiences, but there was a little something missing.

You could accomplish a decent amount of the essentials with their website like viewing your boarding pass and flight status, making adjustments to your flight or adding services, and even being able to download your boarding pass to your phone.

While that experience was decent, mobile apps offer a leg up that you just can’t get with the mobile web, offering things like location-aware information and crucial app alerts with important flight information and changes, rather than having to manually check for the information by logging into their website.

In a press release on the announcement of their app, they said “[The] app enhances the customer experience and provides new digital tools on the day of travel”.

The company says the app will allow travelers to “book travel, check-in for flights, use their mobile boarding pass, and manage their trips within the app”. Also included is the ability to get flight status, add seats or bags, and access loyalty account information.

As someone who has had favorable experiences, this seemingly little addition for customers is something I am quite happy with.
