Summary

  • Emirates added a daily London Stansted-Dubai flight for passengers traveling to popular destinations.
  • Stansted Airport boasts great connectivity to Central London and large corporations, making it appealing for Emirates.
  • The London Stansted-Cambridge Corridor is a thriving hub comparable to Silicon Valley, boosting the UK economy.

In December 2017, Dubai-based Emirates announced it would start flying between Dubai International Airport (DXB) and London Stansted Airport (STN) on June 8, 2018. At the time, Emirates had six daily flights between Dubai International Airport (DXB) and London Heathrow (LHR) and three daily flights to London Gatwick Airport (LGW). The announcement that they were introducing a daily flight raised a few eyebrows initially, yet it makes perfect sense when you look at why.

By adding a third London gateway, Emirates could be the airline of choice for millions of people looking to fly from London to the popular business destinations of Hong Kong, Dubai, Shanghai, Singapore, and Mumbai. Leisure travelers can also benefit by flying to Dubai and then to destinations such as Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, Bali, and the Indian Ocean islands.

What helps make London Stansted Airport (STN) so important?

London Stansted Airport (STN) is served by the Stansted Express train, which travels between the airport and Liverpool Street Railway Station in central London. Liverpool Street passengers can reach most areas of London by using the city’s extensive underground commuter rail network.

The journey between Stansted Airport (STN) and Central London takes 48 minutes, with trains departing both locations at 15-minute intervals. The service operates seven days a week, 365 days a year, and costs £9.90 ($12.59) when booked in advance.

Besides providing a less crowded and chaotic experience than either Heathrow or Gatwick, Stansted Airport (STN) is the airport of choice for the booming London Stansted Cambridge Corridor. Home to more than 25 of the world’s largest corporations, including Airbus, Astra Zeneca, and the biotechnology company GSK, the corridor is a highly innovative area home to some of the most knowledgeable scientists and engineers.

Globally, the London Stansted Cambridge Corridor is often compared to Silicon Valley and the Boston Innovation District. Today, a highly advanced sci-tech superhighway, the London Stansted Cambridge Corridor, is one of the UK’s fastest-growing regions and is seen as a springboard for the nation’s economy.

Home to the world’s first computer and the discovery of DNA, the region’s secret to success is its connectivity between London and Cambridge. Lying just 60 miles apart and connected by the M11 Motorway and the Cambridge Line train, the Innovation Corridor attracts entrepreneurs, intellectuals, and investors.

Airport authorities share a similar perspective. When speaking about how Stansted Airport felt about the Emirates DXB-STN-DBX flights in the same statement, London Stansted’s Chief Executive Ken O’Toole said:

“We’re delighted that Emirates has recognized the strength of London Stansted’s catchment and the opportunity that our available runway capacity gives them to continue growing in the South East of England over the next decade.

“At this crucial time, the new Emirates services will provide an important boost to the UK economy by strengthening international connectivity and offering greater choice and convenience for passengers traveling to long-haul destinations. London Stansted has seen significant capital investment and growth since its acquisition by MAG in 2013, and we’re looking forward to working with Emirates as we move forward with the next phase of development of the airport and its network of destinations.”

About London Stansted Airport (STN)

Stansted Airport is located near Stansted Mountfitchet in Essex, 42 miles northeast of Central London. Its catchment area includes ten million people who live within an hour’s drive. First opened in 1943, Stansted served as a bomber airfield for the Royal Air Force (RAF) and the United States Army Air Force (USAAF) and as a central maintenance depot. Following the end of World War Two and the departure of the USAAF, Stansted was used to house German prisoners of war.

The United Kingdom Ministry of Civil Aviation took control of Stansted in 1949 and acted as a base of operations for several UK charter airlines. The United States military returned to Stansted in 1954 and extended the airport runway for use by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). However, the military alliance never used Stansted, and in 1966, it was taken over by the British Airports Authority (BAA) and reverted to civilian use.

Looking to avoid the costs involved with flying from Heathrow or Gatwick, Stansted began to flourish as a charter vacation airport. After transitioning from a regional airline flying between Ireland and the United Kingdom to a low-cost, no-frills airline, Ryanair moved its London operations from London Luton Airport (LTN) in 1990. Today, Stansted Airport (STN) is Ryanair’s most extensive UK base, offering flights to 100 European destinations.
