BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – Southwest Airlines officially began nonstop service from Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport to Nashville Sunday.

To commemorate the inaugural flight, BHM rolled out a special gate party for passengers. Travelers were able to enjoy complimentary snacks and giveaways, and had the chance to register for Southwest Airlines Gift Cards.

Sunday’s first flight to Nashville marks the second new flight route for Southwest out of BHM in the last month. On Oct. 3, Southwest began nonstop flights to Phoenix, Arizona.

Birmingham-Shuttlesworth says passenger traffic at the airport has increased by 7% this year. The airport now serves 21 nonstop destinations across 18 United States cities.
