Summary

  • Qatar Airways flight QR017 experienced turbulence over Turkey, resulting in injuries to 6 passengers and 6 crew members at Dublin Airport today.
  • Graeme McQueen from daa stated that airport staff are assisting passengers and providing support to airline personnel after the incident.
  • Qatar Airways has confirmed that the injuries are minor, emphasizing that safety is their top priority and initiating an internal investigation.

A Qatar Airways Boeing 787-9 was met by emergency services at Dublin Airport today after turbulence injured six passengers and six crew members on flight QR017 from Doha. This news follows another severe turbulence event this week, which saw a passenger pass away on a Singapore Airlines 777.

Sky News has shared the following statement from Graeme McQueen, media relations manager at daa, which manages the operations of Dublin Airport,

“Qatar Airways flight QR017 from Doha landed safely as scheduled at Dublin Airport shortly before 13.00 on Sunday. Upon landing, the aircraft was met by emergency services, including Airport Police and our Fire and Rescue department, due to six passengers and six crew [12 total] on board reporting injuries after the aircraft experienced turbulence while airborne over Turkey.”

McQueen added that airport staff are continuing to assist passengers. He also noted that his team is providing airline personnel with support.

Qatar Airways has informed Simple Flying that the injuries are minor. Still, the flag carrier of Qatar has highlighted that those affected are receiving medical attention and that safety remains its top priority. As such, an internal investigation has commenced.

QR17 left Doha at 07:55 and landed in Dublin six hours and 49 minutes later at 12:55, earlier than the scheduled arrival time of 13:30. According to data provided by Flightradar24, the 787 dropped 275 feet at a rate of about 21,888 feet per minute (fpm) over Turkish airspace. However, the company has highlighted that GPS jamming may interfere with data accuracy in this region.

Nonetheless, turbulence has become a notable topic in aviation following flight SQ321 from London Heathrow to Singapore Changi on May 21. Along with the single fatality, there were 104 injuries on board the aircraft. This incident caused the flag carrier of Singapore’s first fatal accident since the crash of SQ006 in 2000.
