The Lakeland Linder International Airport is offering commercial flights for the first time in more than 10 years.

Avelo Airlines now provides nonstop service between the Polk County airport and Tweed-New Haven Airport in southern Connecticut. Avelo is the first and only airline offering this service, according to a media release.

The new flight is offered on Thursday and Sundays on a Boeing Next-Generation 737 aircraft. Fares start at $81.

“This is just the start of Avelo’s partnership with LAL and Central Florida,” said Avelo Airlines Founder and CEO Andrew Levy in a statement.

Located between Tampa and Orlando, Lakeland Linder International Airport is small facility which offers easy and fast service for Florida passengers along the Interstate 4 corridor. It serves around 65 businesses in the region and is home to the NOAA Hurricane Hunters, Draken International, Amazon’s Regional Air Cargo Hub and the Aerospace Center for Excellence. It also hosts the annual Sun n’ Fun Aerospace Expo every spring.

“Avelo Airline flights to and from Lakeland Linder International Airport mark the dawn of a new era in passenger air service for visitors and our residents,” said Lakeland Mayor Bill Mutz in a statement.

Tweed-New Haven Airport is located on Connecticut’s coast will easy access to 15 towns that make up greater New Haven.

Avelo Airlines serves 53 destinations across 24 states and Puerto Rico. So far this year, the airliner has added 16 new routes and 11 new destinations.
