Summary

  • WestJet and WestJet Encore are planning a codeshare with Condor, covering flights from three Canadian cities to the US.
  • WestJet argued that the approval of the codeshare agreement would benefit the public, including providing more options for consumers.
  • The filing emphasized that Condor would not sell tickets for flights between Canada and the US to local consumers.

WestJet and its regional subsidiary, WestJet Encore, are planning a codeshare agreement with Germany-based Condor, a filing with the United States Department of Transportation (DOT) has revealed. Currently, WestJet has listed Condor as an interline partner.

Covering eight airports in the US

According to the filing, WestJet and WestJet Encore, which have separate foreign air carrier permits, want to display Condor’s DE designator codes when the flights are operated by the pair of Canadian airlines.

WestJet explained that Condor’s flight codes would be displayed on flights from Calgary International Airport (YYC), Edmonton International Airport (YEG), and Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) to the eight airports in the US. The map below displays WestJet’s route network from the three Canadian airports to the eight airports that are part of the filing:

The filing revealed that the two airlines would begin their codesharing agreement on June 27. WestJet has requested that the DOT move with the application process quickly, which would enable WestJet and Condor to begin the sales of tickets immediately. Furthermore, WestJet requested that the Department would approve the codeshare agreement indefinitely.

According to WestJet, Condor would operate flights to the YYC, YEG, and YYZ from its hub at Frankfurt Airport (FRA), with the filing saying that the German airline would market the codeshare services in accordance with its rights to fly from the European Union (EU) to the US.

“Condor will not market its codeshare service to local passengers traveling solely between Canada and the United States.”

WestJet argued that a blanket agreement of these services was in the public interest because they enable codeshare partners to develop a full range of services that are permitted by the current agreements. Furthermore, the flights from the three Canadian cities to the eight airports in the US would allow both airlines to use their capacity more efficiently, resulting in more options for consumers.
