China’s Chongqing Airlines has launched direct flights to the Maldives, further boosting the connectivity between the two countries. The inaugural flight landed at Velana International Airport (VIA) yesterday, receiving a celebratory water salute upon arrival.

Chongqing Airlines will operate three flights a week between Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport and Velana International Airport, providing a convenient travel option for tourists.

China remains the largest source of tourists for the Maldives, with over 113,000 Chinese visitors recorded so far this year. The addition of Chongqing Airlines adds to the list of Chinese carriers serving the Maldives, which already includes Beijing Capital Airlines, China Eastern Airlines, Sichuan Airlines, and Xiamen Airlines.

The new flights are expected to further enhance the influx of Chinese tourists to the Maldives, supporting the country’s vital tourism industry and strengthening bilateral relations.
