Avelo Airlines says it will be discontinuing its operations at the Redding Regional Airport within the next few months.

Redding Assistant Airports Manager Lauren Ford says, as of Monday, Aug. 26, there will be no more Avelo flights from Redding to the Hollywood-Burbank Airport in the Los Angeles area. However, she says this doesn’t mean it will be gone forever.

“It’s an unfortunate set of events that caused them to leave our market,” Ford said. “Avelo Airlines has been a solid partner providing that low cost airfare to Redding and we’re very hopeful that they will look at Redding again in the future once their operational challenges have resolved.”

In a statement on Wednesday, Avelo said the decision was made after the ground handler—which provides logistical support such as ticketing, luggage handling and aircraft marshaling to and from the gate—made a business decision to pull out of California entirely.

A representative with Avelo Airlines said, “We recently learned the business partner supporting Avelo’s airport operations at Redding Regional Airport (RDD) will no longer be serving RDD. As a result, we’ve made the decision to cancel Avelo’s route between RDD and Los Angeles’ Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR), effective August 26. This decision also enables us to better utilize our resources elsewhere in Avelo’s system.”

There is, however, potentially another ground handler organization that may be interested, according to Ford. “I have heard of another organization interested in trying to do ground handling at the Redding Airport for Avelo, I just don’t know how those negotiations panned out. Our ground handling for United is done by SkyWest, but SkyWest and United have a business relationship where I don’t think they would venture outside of United or Delta service.”

While RDD has seen consistent growth in air service over the last few years, the airport remains among one of the smaller ones in California.

“We encourage the community to continue to support the airport as strongly as it has over the last three years,” said Ford. “That support continues to build momentum for our local airport and helps to inspire other airlines to consider bringing air service to Redding.”

Even though Avelo is going to be leaving the Redding Airport, taking with it service to Burbank, you can still travel between Redding and the Los Angeles / Hollywood area on United Airlines from Redding to the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).
