Following the collapse of a portion of the roof at Delhi airport‘s Terminal-1 early Friday, which resulted in one fatality and injuries to eight individuals, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has promptly responded. Advising airlines to comply with regulations, the DGCA urged them to either rebook affected passengers on alternative flights or provide full refunds.

The incident occurred amid heavy rainfall that inundated roads across Delhi, exacerbating conditions at the national capital. Emergency responders from Delhi Fire Services (DFS) reported that the collapsed roof section fell onto cars, including taxis. The injured are currently receiving medical treatment at the Medanta hospital located near the airport. Unfortunately, one of the injured individuals passed away despite best efforts to save his life.

Rescue operations included the extraction of a person from a vehicle pinned under an iron beam from the fallen structure. The severity of the incident underscores the challenges posed by the intense weather conditions and necessitates swift measures to ensure the safety and well-being of air passengers.

Following the incident, a thorough search operation was conducted to make sure no one was trapped in the damaged vehicles.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (IGI) Usha Rangnani informed that the traffic going to T-1 departure of the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport has been diverted at CISF check post, towards T-1 arrival.

Three fire-tenders were sent to the airport after a call about the incident was received by the DFS around 5:30 am.

Delhi Airport has announced that all flights of IndiGo and SpiceJet that were expected to depart from T1 are cancelled till 2 pm today. They also added that all other flights that are taking off from T2 and T3 will operate as per schedule.

Besides the roof sheet, the support beams collapsed, damaging the cars parked in the pick-up and drop area of the terminal, the officials said. Agencies
