Air travel is expected to ramp up on Wednesday at airports all around the country as people get away for the Fourth of July holiday. Traffic at airports is then expected to pick up again on July 7 and July 8.

Last Friday, the Transportation Security Administration saw 2.9 million travelers pass through airports — its fourth busiest day on record.

On Monday, there was a ground stop at Newark Liberty International Airport due to a shortage of air traffic controllers at the ATC center in Long Island that handles flights in Newark. So far today, there are no issues.

Cyrus Sarkari, an official from United Airlines, says the airline is expecting record numbers of passengers coming in.

“This 10-day July Fourth holiday, we will see almost 5 million passengers come through our doors at United. That’s about 7% higher than last year. We are ready,” Sarkari said.

Some of the more popular destinations to travel to this Fourth of July holiday include Las Vegas, London, Cancun and Orlando.

Despite a few delays to select destinations, most flights into and out of Newark Liberty International Airport are running on time today.
