Summary

  • Emirates releases a “no-nonsense” safety video focusing on straightforward safety essentials.
  • The video features Emirates cabin crew and passengers explaining key safety information, fostering a sense of involvement.
  • Other airlines have released high-profile safety videos designed to grab attention.

Emirates has released its new “no-nonsense” safety video, which avoids the superfluous and gets straight to the point. The video’s simplicity bucks the industry trend of flashy, attention-grabbing safety videos.

Emirates’ new safety video

The video opens with an Emirates flight attendant telling passengers that the safety briefing will “not have dancers breaking into song, characters from movies, or celebrities trying to be funny.” Instead, it aims to offer a straightforward run-through of safety essentials without the need for something eye-catching, like a famous actor or a gaudy dance set piece. The airline said,

“If you’re expecting dancers, movie stars and singers, we’ve saved that for our inflight entertainment. We take your safety seriously. So here’s our refreshed, no-nonsense safety video for your next Emirates flight.”

How Have Airlines Adapted Their Safety Videos To Aviation’s Many Historical Changes?

Gone are the days of dull and identical explainers that put passengers to sleep.

The video goes through the usual safety information, such as stowing bags and fastening seatbelts, led by Emirates cabin crew. It also makes the clever decision to intercut clips with passengers explaining many key parts, creating the feeling that everyone onboard is involved in the safety process. The video is set entirely in the cabin and, other than some calming music and the odd lense flare, adds nothing artificial.

Entertaining or informative?

Nowadays, airlines often try to make their safety videos as attention-grabbing as possible to get as many passengers watching, and this has become even more imperative in the era of ubiquitous smartphones. However, this approach can detract from the details of the message. We’ve seen a few airlines – Air India’s recently-released safety video featuring Indian folk dancing, or British Airways’ effort from last year, spring to mind – go all-out with their safety videos, although others, such as Japan Airlines, have maintained more understated standards.

Emirates has crammed all of this important safety information into a video of less than four minutes. This is shorter than the new United video (4 minutes 53 seconds) and a far cry from the 9 minutes 33 seconds runtime of Qantas’ latest high-budget safety video.

The new video features Air India’s commitment to safety and the country’s culture.

We’ve also seen a few bizarre efforts at safety videos, including one from Brussels Airlines back in 2022. The Belgian carrier worked with Eurovision entrants and rock group Hooverphonic to essentially create a music video that sung out safety instructions. An Air New Zealand video from 2014 calling itself the “Most Epic Safety Video Ever Made” utilized the country’s famously photogenic landscape in a Hobbit-inspired briefing.

Recent awards

The Dubai-based carrier was recently honored with seven awards at the latest SKYTRAX awards, including World’s Best Inflight Entertainment and Best First Class Airline in the Middle East. Its decision to invest in a top-notch premium economy product also appears to be paying off, with the airline taking home Best Middle East Premium Economy Airline and Catering.

The airline’s renowned ICE inflight entertainment (IFE) system also continues to impress, with Emirates winning best inflight entertainment for the 18th time.
