Starting October 26, Avelo Airlines will begin operating a new route between Lakeland Linder International Airport in Florida and Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport, marking the first route between Lakeland and San Juan, announced the executive director of the Puerto Rico Tourism Company, Carlos Mercado Santiago.

“The new service confirms Avelo’s commitment to Puerto Rico and the great reception the airline has received since it began operating its first route to the island on November 15. This flight from Central Florida provides an excellent and accessible alternative for those looking to enjoy a world-class vacation in the Caribbean as well as for the diaspora, and strengthens Puerto Rico’s position in the region’s airline industry,” said Mercado-Santiago.

“We are very pleased to announce this new nonstop service between Central Florida and San Juan, as we continue to expand our convenient, affordable, and reliable network of flights to Puerto Rico. We are excited about this new route, which will make visiting the Island’s famous beaches and enjoying its cultural activities and nightlife an even easier and more accessible experience for Central Florida residents,” said Andrew Levy, CEO of Avelo Airlines said.

“This new service provides greater diversity to the network that connects our island with the state of Florida, our loved ones who reside there and those who want to explore the diversity that Puerto Rico has to offer.  We will continue to work together with Avelo to further expand their services and connectivity to the Island.  We are very proud of the trust Avelo has placed in us,” said Aerostar President Jorge Hernandez.

Avelo will offer this direct service operated with a Boeing 737-800 aircraft on Wednesdays and Saturdays throughout the year.

It was indicated that the new air route will have an economic impact of around $5.5 to the local treasury.

In addition, it is estimated that the airline’s third flight to the island will add a total of 19,656 available seats to the inventory during its first year of operation. The airline also operates routes from Wilmington, Delaware and New Haven, Connecticut.

The past fiscal year was a very active one for the airline industry with several announcements of new routes and increased flight frequencies from major airlines such as Iberia, United, Avianca, JetBlue, and Spirit, among others.
