Cathay Pacific has unveiled its new safety video, which will be rolled out across its fleet next month. The six-minute video was developed in close collaboration with the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB), and as well as relaying the all-important safety procedures, the video takes the opportunity to showcase the best that the oneworld member airline’s home city of Hong Kong has to offer.

The video was shot at various locations across the city. For example, the “no smoking” announcement was filmed in a typical local restaurant, while the backdrop for the lifejacket demonstration is a dragon boat race. Other iconic Hong Kong scenes featured in the safety video include the Peak Tram, Causeway Bay, and Shek O Beach.

Showcasing the best of Hong Kong

Cathay Pacific’s Chief Customer and Commercial Officer, Lavinia Lau, celebrated the launch of the airline’s new safety video, saying,

“At Cathay Pacific, safety has always been at the heart of everything we do, and this new video embodies our commitment to keeping our customers informed and prepared, while fostering our Move Beyond spirit. We wanted to put our own spin on the video and create something truly memorable that resonates with our global audience and showcases the true essence of our home city on the move. We are deeply appreciative of the support from HKTB, which has allowed us to weave together inflight safety information and the vibrant offerings of Hong Kong in a gripping video.”

Cathay Pacific’s current safety video was developed over seven years ago, and will be replaced by this latest iteration as it is rolled out across the airline’s 179-aircraft fleet from August 1st onwards.

Developing an innovative safety video

Capturing passengers’ attention for long enough while the safety video is shown can be a challenge for airlines nowadays, particularly when a significant proportion of those onboard have flown many times before. As a result, carriers must constantly innovate and develop exciting ways to keep passengers engaged, from dance moves to songs and featuring celebrities. Some have been successful, others not so much.

Cathay Pacific is not the only airline that has recently unveiled a new safety video. In May 2024, United Airlines debuted its latest offering, while earlier this month, Emirates launched its new “no-nonsense” safety video.

Slowly rebounding from the pandemic

Last year, just under 40 million passengers traveled through Hong Kong International Airport (HKG). While it is more than in 2022, this was still significantly less than the pre-pandemic peak of over 70 million passengers, and the air travel recovery in Hong Kong has generally been slower than in neighboring nations. The Hong Kong Tourism Board will, therefore, no doubt be happy with its collaboration with Cathay Pacific to help attract more visitors and business travelers.

The airline itself, meanwhile, plans to resume three routes later this year from its base in Hong Kong:

  • Ningbo (NGB) – August 1st
  • Riyadh (RUH) – October 28th
  • Cairns (CNS) – December 17th.
