The route between Kuala Lumpur and Singapore is one of the busiest international routes in the world, and depending on the time of year and how much capacity has been allocated, it can be the busiest. In August 2024, the route had a total capacity of 477,568 seats, surpassed only by the route between Hong Kong and Taipei with 582,955 seats.

A new livery in the sky

Whatever the ranking, the Kuala Lumpur—Singapore route is hugely important to the economies and travel outcomes of Malaysia, Singapore and the surrounding ASEAN region. As the region’s champion, AirAsia never misses an opportunity to promote air travel and last week, it rolled out a freshly adorned aircraft sporting the ‘Love, Singapore’ livery.

AirAsia, in collaboration with the Singapore Tourism Board (STB), Gardens by the Bay and Mandai Wildlife Group, unveiled the new A320 livery on August 22, 2024. The instantly recognizable livery is part of a joint campaign to promote inbound travel to Singapore from visitors from Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia to capture the year-end travel demand in the region.

The 2010 Airbus A320-200, registration 9M-AHZ and MSN 4361, is carrying the new livery to inspire travelers to rediscover the diverse and vibrant experiences that Singapore has to offer. The design features iconic attractions such as Gardens by the Bay and Mandai wildlife parks, including Singapore Zoo and Bird Paradise.

20 years in Singapore for AirAsia

The star of the show is Merli, Singapore’s energetic and outgoing brand character inspired by the Merlion, the nation’s official mascot. AirAsia Malaysia Managing Director Dato’ Captain Fareh Mazputra said the airline is proud to partner with the Singapore Tourism Board, especially as it marks 20 years of operations in Singapore.

“Currently, we operate 286 flights weekly in and out of Singapore from Malaysia alone. The Kuala Lumpur-Singapore route, being the world’s busiest, is vital for boosting tourism and this partnership is a perfect opportunity to leverage our extensive flight network to strengthen our ties between the neighbouring countries.”

According to ch-aviation, AirAsia Malaysia (AK) has a total fleet of 106 Airbus narrowbody aircraft, with around 80% in service. The data shows that the fleet includes 70 Airbus A320-200s, 29 A320neos, four A321neos and three A321-200(P2F) freighters. The ‘Love, Singapore’ A320-200 was delivered new to AirAsia in July 2010 and has the standard layout of 180 seats in a one-class 3-3 configuration.

This month it’s AirAsia Indonesia’s turn to open new routes, with nonstop flights between Bali and Cairns and from Hong Kong to Jakarta and Bali

The A320 was out of action between August 17 and August 23, but it returned to service with the new livery on August 24 with a flight from Kuala Lumpur International (KUL) to Bangkok Don Mueang International (DMK). Since then, it has been operating from Kuala Lumpur to destinations including Jakarta (CGK), Bali Denpasar (DPS) and Vietnam’s Phu Quoc (PQC).

To help launch the ‘Love, Singapore’ promotion, AirAsia is offering low fares from RM78 ($18) all-in one-way on direct flights from Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Langkawi, Kuching, Ipoh and Kota Kinabalu to Singapore Changi Airport (SIN). The special fares are available for booking until August 30, 2024, and the travel period is valid immediately until June 30, 2025.
