China Eastern Airlines will resume its non-stop seasonal service between Western Australia and Shanghai in early 2025, Perth Airport has confirmed.

According to the WA gateway, the Shanghai-based airline will operate 10 flights between Perth (PER) and Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG) from 24 January to 14 February 2025 to coincide with the peak Chinese New Year period.

China Eastern will use its 232-seater A330-200 aircraft on the route, offering 4,640 seats across the season.

Perth Airport Chief Commercial and Aviation Officer, Kate Holsgrove, emphasised the importance of expanding direct services between China and Western Australia.

“Currently 66,000 Chinese visitors come to Western Australia each year, spending approximately $303 million,” she remarked.

“With additional flights, these numbers will undoubtedly grow and that will benefit the entire economy.

“Later this year, we will also welcome back China Southern Airlines with three flights a week to Guangzhou and Cathay Pacific will increase flights to Hong Kong from six to eleven per week.”

Along with international travel, Holsgrove said the extra capacity to China would help boost Western Australia’s inbound tourism sector and WA exports via increased cargo.

“The Perth Airport team, in partnership with Tourism WA, continues to explore new market opportunities and is committed to delivering safe, convenient air services for the community in Western Australia,” she added.

In July, China Eastern Airlines announced the launch of flights between Melbourne and the city of Nanjing, the first time Victoria has been linked with its sister state in China, Jiangsu Province.
