“I am pleased with China Southern Airlines’ positive decision. Apart from Chinese New Year, the winter season is also a peak travel period in China and Sabah has become a popular tourist destination,” she was quoted as saying.
Liew said in the first seven months of 2024, Chinese tourists represented the largest share of international visitors to Sabah, totalling 262,070 arrivals, a 905.9% increase compared to 26,054 in the same period in 2023.
She said the tourist group accounted for 41% of Sabah’s total international tourists, highlighting the necessity of increasing flight capacity to meet growing demand.
The KK-Guangzhou route is said to be originally part of the summer schedule, now extended into the airline’s winter schedule, reportedly to be running from October 30 this year until March next year.
