The US-based ultra-low-cost carrier (ULCC) Allegiant Air may have secretly increased its order of Boeing 737 MAX aircraft. The increase in the number of ordered aircraft was noticed in the airline’s recent press release about financing commitments for some Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 MAX aircraft from BNP Paribas and Jackson Square Aviation (JSA).

Allegiant’s previous order consisted of 50 Boeing 737 MAX and the options for an additional 50, for a total of 100 aircraft. This time around, the airline alluded that it has purchased up to 130 aircraft of the type. Simple Flying dug deeper into the matter to possibly identify the order discrepancy.

January 2022 Announcement

In January of last year, Allegiant Air announced a multi-year deal with Boeing for the purchase of 50 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft. The order comprised 737 MAX 7 and 737 MAX 8-200 models. The airlines also confirmed the options for an additional 50 aircraft. The airline aimed to take delivery of the jets beginning in 2023. The Chairman and CEO of Allegiant, Maurice J. Gallagher, Jr., commented at the time,

“Our approach to fleet has always been opportunistic, and this exciting transaction with Boeing is no exception. While the heart of our strategy continues to center on previously-owned aircraft, the infusion of up to 100 direct-from-the-manufacturer 737s will bring numerous benefits for the future – including flexibility for capacity growth and aircraft retirements, significant environmental benefits, and modern configuration and cabin features our customers will appreciate.”

On October 3rd, the airline announced a $412 million commitment with the BNP Paribas Bank and JSA for leasing seven Airbus A320 CEOs and four Boeing 737 MAX aircraft. The innovative deal allows the airline to enjoy an attractive cost to support its growing fleet. The Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Allegiant, Robert Neal, commented,

“We are delighted with BNP Paribas and Jackson Square’s creativity in providing what we believe is an efficient framework that affords us robust liquidity to support foundational investments in our fleet. This transaction taps into young A320 CEO aircraft and will also serve as the inaugural financing for our Boeing 737 MAX equipment.”

The recent press release also highlighted that the airline has agreed to purchase up to 130 Boeing 737 MAX 7s and 737 MAX 8-200 models in a multi-year deal with Boeing.

Allegiant clarifies the order discrepancy

It was not certain if the airline discreetly added to its firm order or increased its options to be exercised at a later time. Simple Flying got in touch with the media team at Allegiant Air. The spokesperson confirmed that the airline placed an initial order of 50 Boeing 737 MAX with options for an additional 50. However, the order was recently upgraded to having options for a total of 80 aircraft. The airline stated,

“Boeing has been a great partner to us. As we worked to make adjustments to the delivery schedule of our purchased aircraft, we agreed with Boeing to acquire options for 30 additional aircraft. We have also agreed to upgrade six 737-7 aircraft to the max 737-8-200 model. In all, we have purchased 50 aircraft and have options for a total of 80 aircraft.”
