Travelers will no longer be able to take a nonstop flight from New Orleans to a Texas city in October after American Airlines cut several nonstop routes to popular destinations.

The nonstop flight from Austin–Bergstrom International Airport to Louis Armstrong International Airport will be eliminated, MSY spokesperson Erin Burns confirmed.

Removing MSY will reduce around 4,000 monthly seats, according to Simple Flying, and is one of many significant changes that the Texas-based carrier is implementing. American Airlines is also ending nonstop daily flights from other major cities to Austin, including Las Vegas and Orlando.

“We’re proactively reaching out to impacted customers and apologize for any inconvenience this may cause,” an American Airlines spokesperson told Simply Flying.

Since November of 2023, American Airlines has cut over 20 nonstop routes, Simple Flying said, significantly downsizing the number of direct flights offered by the carrier. But, as a compromise, the airline is planning to expand seat capacity to its hubs in Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas and Fort Worth, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Philadelphia and Phoenix.

American Airlines added a daily, nonstop flight from New Orleans to Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in the summer of 2021. MSY spokesperson Erin Burns said the additional service was the first new flight added to the airport since the coronavirus pandemic.

At the time, the route to New Orleans, in addition to other tourist destinations like Las Vegas, Nashville and Orlando, was included because of “anticipated increase in business travel this summer,” American Airlines said in a statement.

As of last year in November, American Airlines offered eight nonstop flights out of MSY, including Austin, Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas, Miami, Philadelphia, Phoenix and Washington D.C. The airline recently announced that it will also offer daily nonstop flights to LaGuardia Airport in Queens, New York, just in time for the holiday season on November 5.

The daily nonstop flight from Austin to New Orleans will end on October 6, 2024.
