US carrier Avelo Airlines is expanding yet again. The carrier has announced two new routes from Sonoma County in Northern California, connecting wine country to Salt Lake City and the Los Angeles area.

Setting off to Salt Lake City

At the beginning of this year, Avelo Airlines opened a base at Charles M. Schulz Sonoma County Airport (STS) in Santa Rosa. Today, it announced the latest additions to its route network. Beginning October 24th, the airline will commence flights to Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC), making it the only airline linking Sonoma to the capital of Utah.

The service will be operated twice weekly on Thursdays and Sundays with Avelo’s Boeing 737 Next Generation (the series before the MAX) aircraft. The flights take around two hours and initially depart STS in the mornings before setting into a 13:17 departure by November 7th, landing in Salt Lake City at 16:07. The return flights depart SLC at 16:46, arriving back in Santa Rosa at 17:48. Avelo Airlines Founder and CEO Andrew Levy highlighted the benefits of this new service:

“We are thrilled to announce our new nonstop service from Salt Lake City to the Bay Area/Sonoma County, offering travelers a convenient, reliable, and affordable way to one of the most beautiful and vibrant regions in Northern California. We look forward to Inspiring Travel this fall to Sonoma County and inspiring Northern Californians to explore all the Beehive State has to offer.”

The city is set between the Wasatch Mountains and the Great Salt Lake and is known for its dynamic arts scene, gastronomy, and outdoor activities, including skiing.

The carrier’s Chief Operating Officer explained how the airline only canceled two flights last month.

The city notably hosted the 2002 Winter Olympic Games and is set to host again in 2032. In a statement, Executive Director of Salt Lake City Department of Airports Bill Wyatt noted how significant this link is for local residents and how the airport’s ongoing expansion projects helped make the new route possible:

“Salt Lake City extends an enthusiastic welcome to Avelo Airlines. This new nonstop service to the Bay Area/Sonoma County is a plus for our passengers. California is one of Utah’s most popular destinations and is a welcome addition to SLC’s route network.

“The additional gates the airport built as part of The New SLC has made this new service possible.”

For Bay Area residents looking for a bit of warmth this winter, the carrier is also introducing flights to Southern California.

Opening up Ontario

Avelo will commence services from Sonoma County to Ontario International Airport (ONT) on October 10th. Located in the Inland Empire, the airport is around 35 miles east of downtown Los Angeles in the center of Southern California. Ontario is often used as a gateway to Los Angeles to avoid the congestion of the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) while still being within reach of shopping, dining, beaches, Hollywood, and Disneyland.
