American airline company United Airlines signed a deal with SpaceX to bring Starlink’s Wi-Fi service to the airline’s mainline and regional aircraft fleet—for free.

United customers will soon experience internet service when they travel by air and when they land on ground.

The company expects Starlink on all United aircraft—more than 1,000 planes—over the next several years. Testing begins in early 2025 with the first passenger flights expected later that year.

Starlink is engineered by SpaceX. It claims to deliver internet to remote locations previously unreachable by traditional cells of Wi-Fi signals.

United claims it will be the first carrier in the world to offer Starlink service at this scale.

“Everything you can do on the ground, you’ll soon be able to do onboard a United plane at 35,000 feet, just about anywhere in the world,” claimed United CEO Scott Kirby.

“This connectivity opens the door for an even better inflight entertainment experience, in every seatback – more content, that’s more personalised. United’s culture of innovation is, once again, delivering big for our customers.”

Recently, The Verge reported that the Starlink deal comes the same week Federal Communications Commission Jessica Rosenworcel said she wanted to see more competition to SpaceX’s Starlink.

Starlink has launched an estimated 7,000 satellites into orbit since 2018.

Rosenworcel claimed that SpaceX controls “almost two-thirds of the satellites that are in space right now.”

“Our economy doesn’t benefit from monopolies. So we’ve got to invite many more space actors in many more companies that can develop constellations and innovations in space,” she said.

Recently, T-Mobile made headlines last week when it tested an emergency alert via a Starlink satellite.
