Regional jets operate over 5,500 daily flights to, from, and in the US in September, based on examining all planned services using OAG data. They will be on just over one in five of the country’s services this month. The Airbus A220 is not counted as it is a mainline type.

Due to the scope clause agreement, it is, of course, massively about larger machines nowadays, reducing seat-mile costs and offering a longer range. The Embraer E175, CRJ900, and CRJ700 operate about seven in 10 RJ flights; the CRJ700 was used on American Eagle’s exciting but short-lived mountain hopper service. In contrast, small, cramped, single-class, 50-seat aircraft, the CRJ200 and ERJ145, are decreasing fast.

In fifth place in September is Portland, Oregon, to Kansas City. As you’d expect, it is by Alaska Airlines
Horizon Air-operated 76-seat E175s, with 12 first-class seats, 16 in premium class, and 48 in regular economy. The carrier has served the route since 2016.

It runs six times weekly (no Saturday service). AS2160 leaves Portland, Alaska Airlines’ second-busiest hub, at 10:00, arriving in Kansas City at 15:24 local time (3h 24m block time). Returning, AS2159 departs at 16:05 and gets back at 17:54 (3h 49m). It competes directly with Southwest’s weekend-only operation.

In fourth place is Monterrey to Detroit. Based on the Great Circle, it covers virtually the same distance as number five. Their similarity means the order may change based on real-world operations. It is in the hands of Aeromexico
Connect’s 99-seat E190s, which have 11 business seats and 88 in economy.

The route, which exists to feed Delta Air Lines
, is served five times weekly in September, although frequencies increase later in the year. Delta and Aeromexico jointly operated until 2022, with Aeromexico being the sole carrier after that.

AM2722 leaves Monterrey at 13:35 and arrives in Michigan at 19:10 local time (3h 35m), where the aircraft and crew remain overnight. AM2723 leaves at 08:30 and returns at 10:21 (3h 51m).

Portland, Oregon, to Anchorage is third. It is the second entry for Portland and Alaska Horizon, which serves it double daily on the E175. Alaska Airlines itself has a daily service, primarily using the 737-800 and 737-900, although two other variants appear this month: the 737-700 (only three times) and 737 MAX 9 (twice).

Alaska Horizon’s E175-operated flights operate as follows. AS2042 leaves Portland at 09:15 and arrives in Alaska at 12:07 local time (3h 52m), followed by AS2559 at 18:50, which arrives at 21:26 local (3h 36m).

The operating aircraft do not turn and return to Oregon but rather fly within Alaska. Returning to the Lower 48, AS2080 leaves Anchorage at 12:20 and arrives in Portland at 17:04 local time (3h 44m), while AS2041 departs at 19:10 and arrives at 23:53 (3h 43m).

Mexico City to Raleigh Durham is second. Naturally, it is operated by Aeromexico Connect’s E190s, which began flying to North Carolina for the first time in July 2024.

The route runs daily, with AM430 leaving Mexico City at 08:55 and arriving in Raleigh Durham at 15:14 local (4h 19m). Returning, AM431 leaves at 16:39 and gets back at 19:10 (with a pretty considerable block time of 4h 31m!).

In first place in September is Queretaro to Detroit on—you guessed it—Aeromexico Connect’s E190s. The carrier began the route, which feeds Delta, in September 2018. It existed until March 2020 and returned on January 7, 2024. It operates four times weekly, the lowest frequency of the USA’s five longest RJ routes this month.

AM2608 departs from Queretaro at 13:44 and arrives in the US at 19:56 (4h 12m). Like Monterrey-Detroit mentioned above, the aircraft and crew remain overnight. AM2609 then leaves at 09:00 and gets to Mexico at 11:24 (4h 24m). While this route is the longest by distance, it is second for block time, behind Raleigh Durham to Mexico City.
