Mexico has recently achieved Category 1 status by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The new flights are part of the carrier’s expansion plan in the United States. The budget carrier aims to connect Miami with more destinations in Mexico.

The launch of new flights

Viva Aerobus has announced the launch of three-weekly services between Monterrey International Airport (MTY) and Miami International Airport (MIA) beginning on July 1, 2024. The airline also announced that it will begin four-weekly direct services between Merida Airport (MID) and MIA beginning July 2, 2024. The MTY-MIA service will run on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, departing from MTY at 08:35 hours and arriving in MIA at 14:50.

The MID-MIA service will operate on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays. The airline aims to use its Airbus A320 family fleet (A320 and A321) on the new routes. Viva’s A320s are configured to seat 186 passengers, and the A321 can accommodate up to 240 passengers. The carrier’s plan to leverage its modern fleet on popular routes like MIA shows its commitment towards improving passenger experience.

The Chief Executive Officer of Viva Aerobus, Juan Carlos Zuazua, expressed his enthusiasm for network expansion in the US by stating,

“We are excited to start flying to new cities in the US as part of our major expansion strategy in this country, encouraging passengers to take advantage of our increased connectivity, low fares, and modern fleet. This new route not only connects individual cities but provides The Magic City passengers with a wide range of connecting flights that link Monterrey and Merida to over 30 key destinations to discover Mexico. It also represents more opportunities for Mexican travelers to enjoy Miami´s natural wonders, museums, and theme parks, serving leisure, VFR, and business markets; thus, boosting local tourism and economy.”

MIA is a focus airport for many Mexican carriers and one of the fastest-growing destinations for Mexico. MIA saw nearly 1.7 million travelers to and from Mexico in 2022, making it the second-largest international market. Both the MIA and Miami County authorities were delighted by the news. The Miami-Dade County Mayor, Daniella Levine Cava, stated,

“I greatly look forward to welcoming Viva Aerobus and its daily flights to Miami-Dade County next summer, which will provide our residents and visitors with even more travel options to Mexico. Mexico has been one of MIA’s fastest-growing travel destinations in recent years, and I am excited to see Viva Aerobus add to that growth with its new service to Monterrey and Merida coming soon.”

Other new routes to the US

Just last week, Viva Aerobus launched new routes to Austin, Denver, Oakland, Orlando, and San Francisco from Monterrey. The airline will commence services to Denver in January 2024, and services to other destinations will follow in March, May, and July. Viva is addressing the growing demand for international air travel, particularly to the US, from Mexico. The low-cost options seem to be the most attractive for leisure travelers.
