As airlines, airports and aircraft manufacturers grapple with the challenges to aviation in a zero-emissions world, it is clear that the smart ones are forming strategic collaborations rather than trying to figure everything out within their own four walls.

In recent weeks, Embraer has announced two key partnership developments that it hopes will propel it forward on multiple fronts. The partners involved are SIA Engineering Company on E2 maintenance in Asia and American Airlines joining the Energia Advisory Group.

Growing E2 support in Asia

Bringing a new aircraft type into a region brings many challenges, a key one being the support and services network that gives operators confidence the launch will go well. Embraer has had a strong presence in Asia for a long time, and its recent successes with the E2 series bode well with airlines around the region looking for new generation, cleaner and greener aircraft.

With close to 200 Embraer E-Jets already operating in the Asia-Pacific region, there is already a well-established network of maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) providers, including SIA Engineering Company (SAIEC) and its subsidiary SIA Engineering (Philippines) Corporation (SAIEP).

On September 28, Embraer signed a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore adding MRO services for the E-Jets E2 family of aircraft. This seems logical because SIAEP has been an Embraer authorized service center since 2017. Its capabilities include aircraft certification, scheduled heavy maintenance checks, airframe structural inspections, repairs, modifications, painting and non-destructive testing checks.

Singapore Airlines subsidiary and low-cost carrier Scoot has ordered nine Embraer E190-E2s, while Malaysia’s SKS Airways has signed for ten of the larger E195-E2 version. Both airlines will be the launch customers for the E2 variants and will induct their first aircraft next year.

American Airlines is on the Energia flightpath

At the end of September, Embraer announced that American Airlines had joined its Energia Advisory Group. This group comprises a team of airlines, lessors, suppliers and other experts advising Embraer on developing sustainable aircraft for the future.

These stakeholders are collaborating to define and establish the real-world requirements for sustainable, emission-free and commercially viable aviation. American Airlines is the largest operator of regional aircraft in the US and was named 2023 Eco-Airline of the Year by Air Transport World. It will help define performance and design requirements for the four Energia concept aircraft, which will use a range of electric, hydrogen and hybrid propulsion technologies.

President and CEO of Embraer Commercial Aviation, Arjan Meijer, said it is essential for Energia’s success that Embraer involves a wide variety of air operators and that American Airlines joining the group is a significant step forward.

“This group has developed into a core part of the program because of the breadth and depth of expertise the different members bring to the table. We’re excited to work together with a world-leading airline on the biggest challenge our industry faces.”

The Energia program encompasses four new aircraft concepts powered by new technologies and renewable energy in the 9-50 seat market. The project is considering several energy sources, propulsion architectures and airframe architectures to reduce carbon emissions by 50% starting in 2030, including electric, hybrid-electric and the Energia H2 Fuel cell hydrogen-electric concepts.
