On October 6, Icelandair reported that the number of passengers transported increased by nearly 8% in September compared to last year. The airline revealed it had carried 416,000 passengers during the month. This brings the total number of passengers to nearly 3.4 million throughout the year.


Passenger numbers during September

Icelandair revealed The Chief Executive Officer of Icelandair, Bogi Nils Bogason, spoke about the increase. Bogason said,

“We are pleased to see a healthy increase in passenger numbers between years and continued improvement in unit revenue as we close the strong third quarter, the largest quarter in our history in terms of number of flights. I would like to thank our employees for their great work and dedication during the busy summer period.”

Of the 416,000 passengers that Icelandair carried in September, 175,000 of them were traveling to Iceland. This represents a 24% increase in travelers on the airline when compared to last September. Nearly 50,000 of the passengers were traveling from Iceland. The airline also reported that over 168,000 passengers were carried on transatlantic flights and 23,000 of its passengers were carried on domestic flights within Iceland.

The airline also reported that it had considerably improved on-time performance. Icelandair revealed its on-time performance for the month of September was 81%. This was a nearly 10% increase when compared to last year when the airline recorded an on-time performance of 71.2%.

During the month of September, Icelandair also recorded a load factor of 82.7%. This was a slight decrease from the 83.3% that was recorded in September 2022. The airline also reported over 1.5 million available seat kilometers (932,000 ASM). This was a 12% increase compared to September 2022 when it recorded 1.3 million available seat kilometers (807,000 ASM).

Passenger increases throughout the year

The airline recorded 19% more passengers year to date than it did last year. Icelandair recorded 2.8 million passengers through September last year. Year-to-date, Icelandair reported nearly 1.5 million passengers traveling to Iceland. It also reported nearly 500,000 passengers traveling from the country. The airline also reported that it had carried over 200,000 passengers domestically in Iceland and over 1.25 million passengers on transatlantic flights.

The airline has recorded an on-time performance of 77% throughout the year. This is a 5.2% increase compared to last year’s number of 71.8%. The airline is still increasing its performance, as it recorded 82.7% in September. Bogason continued in a statement about the airline’s improvements. He said,

“We are also proud to have received two awards for our great team’s efforts in offering world-class passenger service. In September, Icelandair was rated a 2024 Five Star Major Airline at the APEX Global EXPO, and this week, we received the Danish Travel Awards as Best European Airline. We are grateful to our passengers for their loyalty of continuing to choose Icelandair.”

Icelandair’s load factor year to date is 82.9%. This is also a 2% increase over last year’s number of 80.9%. The airline recorded over 12 million ASK (7.45 million) year to date.
