Avelo Airlines, the US carrier that had its maiden flight in April 2021, is set to implement a major capacity expansion this coming Thanksgiving holiday season. It will offer 51,366 seats between November 22 and 26, 2023, a whopping 57% capacity increase versus the same period in 2022. Let’s take a look at the airline’s capacity this Thanksgiving.


Where is Avelo Airlines flying this Thanksgiving season?

Primarily based in Burbank Bob Hope Airport (BUR) in California, Avelo Airlines operates with a fleet of 16 Boeing 737NG aircraft, including seven 737-700s and nine 737-800s.

For the period between November 22 and 26, 2023, Avelo is planning to operate 306 flights, according to data from Cirium. The company only serves domestic flights currently. It will make 51,366 seats available, averaging 167.9 per departure. November 24 and 26 will be Avelo’s busiest days, with 70 flights each. It is increasing its seat capacity by 57% compared to 2022’s Thanksgiving season.

New Haven Airport (HVN) will have 54 departures during the Thanksgiving weekend, while Burbank will have 31, Orlando (MCO) will have 27, and Wilmington (ILG) will have 20.

These are Avelo’s main routes during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend:

  1. Orlando-New Haven – seven round flights and 2,646 seats available overall
  2. West Palm-New Haven – six round flights and 1,868 seats available overall
  3. New Haven-Fort Lauderdale – six round flights and 1,868 seats available overall.

What about Las Vegas?

In September, Avelo Airlines began operations from its new base in Las Vegas, Nevada. Harry Reid International (LAS) became Avelo’s sixth base and began flights on six routes to destinations across Oregon, Iowa, California, and Texas.

During the Thanksgiving holiday season, Avelo will fly from Las Vegas to Arcata/Eureka, Brownsville, Dubuque, Redmond/Bend, Salem, and Santa Rosa. It will have 13 flights during this period, averaging between two and three departures daily. Avelo’s other hubs are Hollywood Burbank, Tweed New Haven, Orlando, Raleigh-Durham, and Wilmington.

A brief look at all airlines flying this Thanksgiving season in the US

This Thanksgiving season will bring the busiest days of the year for air transport in the United States. According to data from Cirium, it is expected there will be 106,485 flights during the period between November 22 and 26, with 15.40 million seats available, both on domestic and international routes.

November 26 will be the busiest, with 24,518 flights expected for that day alone. Every carrier except for JetBlue Airways is expected to have a year-over-year seat capacity increase during the period. Avelo Airlines and Breeze will have the largest percentage growths, increasing their seats available by 57% and 80%, respectively.

The top four airlines in the United States, American, Delta, Southwest, and United, will offer 85,291 flights and nearly 12 million seats. American Airlines is increasing its Thanksgiving seating capacity by 5% versus the previous year; Delta is increasing it by 8%; Southwest by 13%; and United Airlines by 8%.
