SEOUL, Nov. 22 (Yonhap) — South Korea’s transport ministry said Wednesday it has imposed fines on Vietnam Airlines and Aero Mongolia on charges of violating the country’s aviation law.

Vietnam’s flag carrier was slapped a fine of 25 million won (US$19,300) for a lengthy wait with passengers aboard.

On July 14, the airline’s plane, which departed from Hanoi, temporarily landed at Incheon International Airport, west of Seoul, before arriving at Gimhae International Airport in South Korea’s southeastern port city of Busan.

The aircraft stayed in Incheon airport’s movement area for more than five hours with passengers aboard while preparing for takeoff.

Under the Aviation Business Act, an international aircraft cannot wait in the movement area with passengers aboard for over four hours.

The Mongolian flag carrier was imposed a 10 million-won fine for operating the Incheon-Ulaanbaatar route since July 1 without approval.

“To protect air traffic users, we will manage and oversee foreign airlines so they will thoroughly comply with aviation regulations,” a ministry official said.
