Summary

  • Air New Zealand may soon be in the running for an Oscar with their Hollywood-quality safety videos.

  • Air New Zealand’s new campaign celebrates the Kiwi mindset and commitment to enabling adventure for all travelers.

With more and more airlines producing Hollywood-quality safety and promotional videos, there may come a day when Oscars are handed out to those judged the best. If that ever happens, Air New Zealand will be one of the first nominated after the airline’s many years of producing iconic clips, perhaps inspired by the host of blockbuster movies filmed in its backyard.

A brighter future in Hollywood?

As many movie stars know, the film industry is ruthless, and stars and directors switch allegiances constantly. This week, one of the stars of Air New Zealand movies, Dave the Goose, has called time on his aviation career and is off to Hollywood, hopefully on the airline’s Boeing 777 flight to Los Angeles.

Air New Zealand Hits US Competitive Headwinds

Air New Zealand is feeling the headwinds from hot competition on the North America to NZ routes that did so well in 2023.

Dave joined the airline in 2016 to star in the award-winning ‘Better Way to Fly’ campaign, and since then, he has been featured in a flock of ads from Los Angeles, Canada and New Zealand. The voice of Dave the Goose, laconic Australian actor Bryan Brown also penned a sign-off to his mate, noting that Dave brings out his inner goose and will be missed now he’s leaving for a new career.

Air New Zealand is parting with Dave the Goose on good terms and yesterday released a short video to let him tell his own story, albeit voiced by Brown, who has a little cameo at the end where he reprises his role with Tom Cruise in the 1988 movie Cocktail.

Air New Zealand’s General Manager of Australia, Kathryn O’Brien, said Dave has been an icon of Air New Zealand’s Aussie ads for eight years and will be missed by his Kiwi cousins. She added that Dave has been an integral member of the Air New Zealand crew and answered the call without a honk when asked to highlight the airline’s international network to Australian travelers.

“As we bid farewell to Dave, we thank him for embodying the spirit of adventure and mateship and reminisce on the times he captivated our Aussie passengers. Dave will always have a place in our hearts, we wish him good luck and nothing but clear skies in pursuit of stardom.”

The show must go on

While it may be sad to see Dave go, the show must go on, so Air New Zealand was ready and released its latest blockbuster, titled ‘Your Extraordinary Adventure Awaits’.

While this is a new promotional video in its own right, it also marks a milestone for Air New Zealand as it sets its sights on the future. The heart of the campaign celebrates the Kiwi mindset, which embraces the idea that no matter where you start, you can go on an incredible adventure.

The new campaign captures Air New Zealand’s commitment to fostering a sense of adventure in passengers irrespective of where their journey is taking them. Air New Zealand General Manager Brand and Marketing Jane Anthony said the campaign is more than a visual spectacle and it represents a cultural shift and a fresh approach for the airline:

“‘Your Extraordinary adventure awaits’ serves as both an invitation and a declaration – an invitation for New Zealanders to embark on transformative journeys and a declaration of the airline’s unwavering commitment to enabling adventure.”

After enduring the world’s longest pandemic closures, Air New Zealand has worked tirelessly to restore global and domestic connectivity to New Zealanders and offer all of its people the opportunity to continue their careers with the airline. After all that focus on rebuilding the airline, Anthony said the campaign signals a shift back to facilitating the sense of wonder and excitement that travel brings.
