Hawaii’s hometown carrier, Hawaiian Airlines, has officially inaugurated its scheduled nonstop service between Honolulu and Salt Lake City. It becomes the second carrier to operate daily flights between the two destinations.
Aloha Utah: A new Hawaiian service
Hawaiian Airlines began ticket sales for its new service to Salt Lake City in November 2023. The inaugural flight was operated on May 15 with its 189-seat Airbus A321neo. Flightradr24 shows that the inaugural flight (HA84) departed Honolulu International Airport (HNL) at 21:09 and landed at Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) at 07:11 local time.

At the gate, passengers booked for the flight received fresh orchid lei, and were treated to passion-orange-guava (POG) juice, cake, as well as live music and hula by the Hawaiian Airlines Serenaders. The new service will be operated daily with the following schedule (all times local):

Passengers onboard the A21neo will have access to free high-speed Starlink internet and enjoy Hawaii-inspired meals, snacks, and complimentary in-flight entertainment, among other amenities. Speaking about the new service, Hawaiian Airlines Executive Vice President and Chief Revenue Officer Brent Overbeek said,
“We know the Hawaiian Islands have a special place in the heart of Utahns, and for some, a Hawaii vacation also means reuniting with friends and family. Our new Salt Lake City service comes at the perfect time for travelers planning their summer vacations, and we look forward to welcoming them with our award-winning Hawaiian hospitality.”
Flying from Honolulu to Utah
Given Utah and Hawaii’s tourism and educational ties, the new service is expected to strengthen cultural ties between the two places. Utah State has one of the highest concentrations of Pacific Islanders in the US, with about 60,000 people living there. Salt Lake City became the Hawaiian carrier’s 16th gateway in the Continental US, the most of any airline serving the islands.
Hawaiian Airlines joins Delta on the route. The Atlanta-based carrier operates daily flights between Honolulu and Salt Lake City with its Boeing 767-300ER aircraft. As such, it offers about 259 more seats than Hawaiian Airlines each week. With about 15 airlines now serving Salt Lake City, Delta has more flights than all other carriers combined.

Following Hawaiian’s inaugural service, Utahns are invited to the airline’s 31 Days of Lei celebrations to honor the 95-year legacies of May Day and Hawaiian Airlines. May 1 is known as Lei Day across the islands. Hawaiian Airlines employees will host a unique lei stand experience at City Creek Center on May 18 from 11:00 to 19:00. The experience will be accessible to the public, and attendees will receive orchid hair pins, flower lei, exclusive merchandise, and POG-flavoured cotton candy.
