United Airlines will introduce its newest aircraft – the Airbus A321neo – on new routes to five states this Fall. It comes as the carrier has been gradually receiving more planes and operating them on limited routes since November of last year.
The new routes on the aircraft type will originate from the airline’s hub at Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) and are expected to begin in August and October. United will also deploy the aircraft on one returning route after pulling the plane from it earlier this month.
New A321neo service!
According to Aeroroutes, the airline has scheduled the A321neo on seven routes from ORD as it continues receiving additional deliveries. Currently, the aircraft will be utilized on the routes until December 2nd, according to United’s schedule filing.

Four in August, three in October
The aircraft will continue to operate its current routes in addition to the new routes. The majority of the new service will begin in August, with flights scheduled to Boston Logan International Airport (BOS), Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), Portland International Airport (PDX), and San Diego International Airport (SAN).

According to aviation data and analytics provider Cirium, the A321neo is scheduled on 94 frequencies between ORD and BOS, operating 47 flights in each direction. From ORD to LAX, the A321neo will be utilized on 91 flights – 46 LAX bound and 45 in return. A total of 67 flights are scheduled between ORD and PDX. 34 frequencies are expected to PDX, while 33 will operate to ORD. SAN will see 11 flights from ORD and 11 flights back, totaling 22 flights between the two destinations.
The three other new routes are set to begin in October. They include frequencies to Denver International Airport (DEN), Miami International Airport (MIA), and Tampa International Airport (TPA) on top of the four new routes launched in August.

The airline will face steep competition from other carriers already serving the routes.
The A321neo is scheduled on 20 flights between ORD and DEN, operating 10 frequencies in each direction. United will slash that number in half when deploying the aircraft to MIA. It will only operate five flights in each direction, totaling 10. Service between ORD and TPA will also have the same frequencies, in addition to ORD-RSW, which the aircraft last flew on May 1st.
Inside the aircraft
United has configured its A321neos to accommodate exactly 200 passengers across two classes. United First comprises 20 recliner seats in a 2-2 format with 37 inches of pitch and 21 inches of width. The economy cabin consists of 57 United Economy Plus seats, which boast more legroom. The seats, in a 3-3 configuration, have a standard pitch ranging from 33 inches to 38 inches.

The pitch is 18.4 inches, and the recline is 3 inches. United Economy houses the remaining 123 seats. They are still in a 3-3 layout but the seat pitch is less at 30 inches, while the width remains the same. The recline, however, is about an inch less than what is offered in United Economy Plus.
According to ch-aviation, the airline currently has eight A321neos with more than 120 on order.
