AA offers different flights along this route via stopovers at different airports in the US.

Route Distance
Barcelona (BCN) to Dallas (DFW) 5195 Miles

Barcelona-EL Prat Airport—which has some of the most delightful lounges—couples with American Airlines’ largest hub, the Dallas Fort Worth Airport, to serve the fifth-longest route operated by American Airlines. AA operates the Boeing 777-300 ER along this 5,195-mile route. According to data from Cirium, an aviation analytics company, there will be 60 operations between BCN and DFW in June 2024.

In these operations, 16,998 seats will be available – the second-lowest number on the list. The seats per departure, 283.3, is the third highest on this list. This route operated by American Airlines has the second-lowest available seats per mile on this list, i.e. 44,152,305 ASMs. According to flightroutes.com, AA offers three different flights from BCN to DFW – one with a stopover in Philadelphia (PHL) while the two others involve stopovers in Chicago (ORD) and Miami (MIA), respectively.

Some of the other airlines that offer a flight along this list include:

  • United Airlines offers a 15 hr 34-minute flight with a stopover at Dulles (IAD), a 16-hour 48-minute flight with a stop-over at New York (EWR), or a 14 hr 23-minute flight with a stopover at Chicago (ORD).
  • British Airways offers a 15 hr 30-minute flight with a stopover at London (LHR)

4

Heathrow to Arizona

This route has the lowest seat count among the longest European routes of AA.

Route Distance
Heathrow, London (LHR) to Arizona (PHX) 5,271 miles

Heathrow, the airport heading for its busiest year ever, features in this list twice. Covering 5,271 miles, American Airlines’ route from London’s Heathrow Airport to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport in Arizona, USA, has 30 Boeing 787-9 operations. In those operations, the number of available seats is 8,190 – the lowest among the longest European routes covered by American Airlines.

Also, the number of seats per departure is only 273, accounting for the lowest among the other European routes discussed in this article. This number is almost 21 seats per departure, lower than the route with the highest seats per departure on this list. It shouldn’t be surprising that this route also has the lowest available seats per mile, 43,169,490 ASMs, with 16,380 seats available.

3

Los Angeles to Heathrow

This route has the highest number of operations, the maximum available seats (per mile), and ASMs.

Route Distance
Los Angeles (LAX) to Heathrow, London (LHR) 5456 Miles

Los Angeles to Heathrow is the second route on the list that falls in the 5400-5500 miles category. American Airlines conducts flights between Los Angeles International Airport and Heathrow International Airport on two different types of aircraft: the Boeing 777-200ER and the newer and larger 777-300ER. These operate 180 flights between LAX and LHR – the highest among the European routes operated by AA. AA also increased the operations in this route to 3 daily operations last year. The airline competes with United Airlines, British Airways, Delta Air Lines, and Virgin Atlantic on this route.

Unsurprisingly, the number of seats available on this route is also the highest in this list—26,430 from LAX to LHR and LHR to LAX each. Furthermore, the seats per departure on either of these two routes is 293.7—the highest on this list. The route also tops the highest available seats per mile on its European routes, 144,202,080. It would be fair to say that this route leaves all the other European routes behind in every aspect besides the length of the route.

2

Athens to Chicago

The lowest number of operations of AA’s five longest routes is between ATH-ORD.

Route Distance
Athens (ATH) to Chicago (ORD) 5463 Miles

Athens International Airport is one of the most punctual airports in the world. With an on-time departure percentage of 87.86% despite serving as many as 13,569 flights along 128 routes are impressive numbers. This airport features the second-largest route operated by American Airlines, as the AA flies to and from Chicago to this historic city in Greece. With United Airlines looking to conduct flights on this route as well, it will be interesting to see what additional perks AA will offer along this route to ward off any stiff competition it might face.
