Avelo Airlines announced yesterday that it will begin flights from Southern Connecticut’s Tweed-New Haven Airport (HVN) to the Washington metropolitan area’s Dulles International Airport (IAD) on July 12. The low-cost carrier proudly highlights that this move makes it the only airline to fly nonstop between the two destinations.
Greater connections
The airline will operate on this route twice a week. Passengers will be able to fly on Mondays and Fridays on seats selling from $46 each way.
Avelo Airlines founder and CEO Andrew Levy shared the following during the Airports Council International’s JumpStart Air Service Development Conference:
“We’re excited to introduce the nation’s capital and surrounding region to Avelo’s low fares, travel-friendly convenience and industry-leading reliability. Getting to Southern Connecticut and everything the greater New England and New York regions have to offer will now be easier than ever. This exclusive nonstop service also makes exploring the abundance of experiences our nation’s capital has to offer a fast and seamless journey for Connecticut visitors.”
Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority VP for Airline Business Development Paul Bobson added:
“We are pleased to welcome Avelo Airlines, our 43rd airline partner to Washington Dulles. This new direct connection from New Haven will offer seamless access to the heart of the National Capital Region, making it easier than ever to explore Washington’s iconic landmarks, attend business meetings and enjoy cultural attractions. Connecticut’s authorities are also celebrating the move, with Governor Ned Lamont stating that the addition helps bolster access to New Haven. Meanwhile, Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro concluded that Avelo is doing great work to link her constituents to the capital of the US.
Strong regional presence
Avelo has been going from strength to strength since commencing operations in its current form in April 2021. In three years, the airline has grown to serve over 40 different airports with its fleet of 16 Boeing 737s.
The expansion shows no signs of stopping, announcing a new route between Orlando and at the turn of the month. This operation will begin on June 7th and is part of the initiative that sees the airline plan 17 new routes in 60 days.

Following this announcement, Avelo began serving North Carolina’s Concord-Padgett Airport. This operation highlights the airline’s goal of serving smaller airports that provide the local community with better connections across the country.
All in all, Tweed-New Haven Airport is an integral spot for Avelo. It acts as a base for the bulk of the carrier’s flights across the East Coast. As such, the airline has been working with the airport on plans to develop a new terminal and extend the site’s runway.
It’s not surprising that Avelo would be involved in this process. After all, the airline is flying to at least 25 destinations from New Haven in July alone. According to data analytics company Cirium, the busiest route is to Orlando International Airport (MCO), with 52 flights each way, providing 9,468 seats between them for the month.

Avelo is thriving in this post-pandemic economy, with domestic air travel going through a robust period of recovery and growth. It has overcome the most significant challenges of launching a brand in the middle of a global health crisis and is now seeing the benefits of its persistence.
