A new airline is about to take to the skies. And, it’s bringing canines and their companions along for the ride. Starting Thursday, May 23, “BARK Air,” an dog-centric airline, will take off. Its flights will carry dogs and their human companions. In a news release on April 11, BARK — a “dog-obsessed” company that makes and offers products, content and services for dogs and their owners — announced it was partnering with a jet charter company to launch BARK Air. As the air travel service launches, its routes will serve the New York City area via Westchester County Airport. Flights will travel to Los Angeles and London, the company said.”BARK Air is the world’s first air travel experience designed specifically for dogs first, and their human companions second, enabling them to travel together comfortably and conveniently,” the company said in announcing the airline’s launch.BARK said the flight service was created to offer air travel alternatives to dog owners and their furry companions. That’s because air travel can often be stressful for dogs and their companions, BARK said.”Traveling long distances with a dog is a challenge many dog parents face, particularly for those dogs that don’t fit into a carrier that can be placed under the seat in front,” the company said in its launch announcement. “Too often, dogs are denied travel, confined to a duffle bag, or endure the stress of flying in cargo.” According to CNN, the service has already gained popularity. It’s already received 5,000 requests for added destinations. The company said it plans to add new routes over the summer. However, the flights don’t come cheap. A one-way ticket for one dog and its companion is currently $6,000 for domestic flights and $8,000 for international travel.
