Summary

  • Emirates only operates 2 jet types: Boeing 777 and Airbus A380, with many active Boeing 777-300ERs and 200LRs.
  • The Boeing 777-200LR is the oldest of Emirates’ passenger aircraft and covers long-haul destinations, including Buenos Aires.
  • The Boeing-200LR flies the Dubai-India route frequently, with some of the carrier’s shortest and longest routes both covered by the aircraft.

Emirates is one of the world’s most prominent airlines and the largest airline in the Middle East. It is notable for only operating two types of passenger jets: the Boeing 777 and the Airbus A380 (including over half of the world’s A380s). The vast bulk of Emirates’ 132 active Boeing 777s are Boeing 777-300ERs (123), while they also have nine active Boeing 777-200LRs. Emirates is one of a select group of airlines operating the Boeing 777-200LR. The Boeing 777-200LR is one of the longest-range airliners in the world and the longest-range airliner offered by Boeing.

Emirates’ active fleet

While Emirates has Airbus 350s and Boeing 787 Dreamliners on order, it currently only operates Boeing 777s and Airbus A380s for passenger flights. According to ATDB.aero, all of its A380s are A380-800s, the Boeing 777s are split between 123 active Boeing 777-300ERs and 9 active Boeing 777-200LRs (with one more inactive).

The Boeing-200LR carries fewer passengers but can travel further than its Boeing 777-300ER counterpart. Emirates’ fleet of 200LR is now, on average, 16 years old, making it the oldest of Emirates’ passenger aircraft. By comparison, the 300ER fleet is, on average, 11.1 years old, and the A380 fleet is 8.3 years old.

The Boeing 777-200LR is also considerably shorter than the Boeing 777-300ER – measuring 209 feet compared to the 300ER’s 242 feet. The wingspan of the two aircraft is identical, while the 300ER stands 7 inches taller. They are both powered by the GE90-115BL engine.

Other airlines operating the Boeing 777-200LR include Air Canada, Air India, AZAL Azerbaijan Airlines, Ethiopian Airlines, Iraqi Airways, Pakistan International Airlines, Qatar Airways, Turkmenistan Airlines, and White Airways.

Where Emirates’ Boeing 777-200LRs fly

According to data from Cirium, an aviation analytics company, Emirates operates 11 routes with the Boeing 777-200LRs (22 routes if one includes the return flights). Emirates employs the aircraft on both short-haul flights within the Middle East region (the Indian subcontinent is also not far from Dubai) and on long-haul destinations as far as Buenos Aires in Argentina.

None of the -200LRs fly to the United States, but they do fly to Canada, Mexico, Brazil, and Argentina in the Americas. Some routes include stopovers on the way to destinations in South America. These include Dubai-Barcelona (Spain)-Mexico City (Mexico) and Dubai-Rio de Janeiro-Buenos Aires (and return).

What Are The Ranges Of The Different Boeing 737 MAX Models?

Boeing built the 737 MAX to compete with Airbus’ A320neo family of aircraft.

Boeing 777-200LR

The Boeing 777 was built to bridge the gap between the Boeing 767 and the Boeing 747. It is a twin-engine, long-haul airliner that first flew in 1994. According to Boeing, the Boeing 777-200LR has 317 second-class seats and a range of 8,555 nautical miles, whereas the Boeing 777-300ER can carry 392 second-class seats but only has a range of 7,370 nautical miles.

The Boeing 777-200 was later followed by the extended-range 777-200ER. The long-range Boeing 777-200LR flew in 2006. At the time, it had the longest airline range (8,555 nautical miles) and was employed on ultra-long-haul flights. It is perhaps curious why Emirates operates its longest-range jets on short-haul flights from Dubai to Bahrain.

While the Boeing 777-200LR may no longer be the longest-range airline in the world (the Airbus A350 XWB Ultra Long Range) can fly for up to 9,700 nautical miles), it is still the longest-range aircraft in Emirates’ fleet (the Airbus A380 can fly 8,000 nautical miles with 544 passengers). It is also still the longest-range Boeing airliner in service.

Boeing is planning to supersede the range of the Boeing 777-200LR with the upcoming Boeing 777X. The Boeing 777X will be the world’s largest and most efficient twin-engine jet and will have a range of up to 8,745 nautical miles. Boeing claims it will have 10% lower fuel use and emissions and 10% lower operating costs than the competition.
