Summary

  • Avianca’s lifemiles+ offers monthly bonus miles & up to 25% off redemption flights, with different membership tiers.
  • Subscribers can benefit from fee-free changes on redemption tickets & double miles with the Amex Elite Card.
  • Avianca’s new Amex credit cards offer up to 100,000 bonus miles and Elite status perks for quick mile earning.

avianca has launched a new loyalty subscription service known as lifemiles+, enabling members to boost their miles-earning potential further and save money thanks to exclusive discounts. The Colombian carrier, based at Bogotá’s El Dorado International Airport (BOG), offers four different membership options to lifemiles+ (Lite, Basic, Pro, and Max), with monthly subscription fees ranging from $20 to $200.

lifemiles+ members earn monthly bonus miles, depending on the level of their subscription, and benefit from using their miles to purchase flights. This includes a 10% discount on redemption flights with Star Alliance carriers such as United Airlines, Air Canada, and Lufthansa, as well as with partner airlines like Iberia, Aeromexico, and GOL. When it comes to redemption flights with avianca, the discount increases to as high as 25%. Additionally, Basic, Pro, and Max level members benefit from no change or cancelation fees on redemption tickets.

The offering is even more attractive when combined with the avianca lifemiles American Express Elite Card. Cardholders benefit from double monthly LifeMiles on purchases (up to a limit), $20 off all monthly lifemiles+ subscription fees, up to 40% savings on stays at lifemiles partner hotels, and an extended lifemiles expiration of 24 months.

Subscribing to lifemiles+ may be worth it for those passengers who regularly book redemption tickets with either avianca or other Star Alliance carriers, or those who would benefit from fee-free changes and cancelations. However, avianca does also hold fairly frequent lifemiles sales, allowing regular members to purchase bonus miles at a significantly reduced rate, which may be a more cost-effective option for some.

The CEO of lifemiles, Matt Vincett, highlighted the benefits of the newly launched credit cards, saying,

“Together with Cardless and American Express, we are pleased to launch excellent new credit card options for mileage enthusiasts. The Premium card, I believe, is especially compelling, but both of our offerings give cardholders the ability to earn miles quickly, and then enjoy discounts when their miles are redeemed. We’ve even packaged-in an Elite status to make reward travel more enjoyable.”

Both credit cards offer fast-track to Silver status upon approval, which brings with it a whole host of rewards, including:

  • Priority services such as check-in, boarding, and baggage handling
  • Complimentary lounge passes, companion passes for avianca’s 12 VIP lounges
  • Additional checked baggage allowance and a 10% discount on premium seat purchases
  • 30% bonus miles accrued on avianca flights for Silver status elite members

The largest airline in Colombia offers members of its lifemiles loyalty program ample opportunities to earn and redeem miles.

Since the pandemic and its associated financial troubles, avianca has reinvented itself, and was named the world’s most punctual airline in 2023. The carrier also recently reintroduced business class on flights over five hours within the Americas, much to the delight of its frequent flyers. That said, business class on the airline’s Airbus A320s is not as comfortable as on its longer flights operated by the Boeing 787-8.
