Summary

  • American Airlines has 69 routes over 2,600 nautical miles (4,815 km) in July/August 2024.
  • Thirteen of them have double daily or more services.
  • Several have more flights than before the pandemic.

If long-haul markets are defined as 2,600 nautical miles (4,815 km) or more, American has 69 routes in the peak northern summer months of July and August 2024. They are to Asia, Australasia, Europe, the Middle East, South America – and even domestically. Using Cirium schedules data to examine the airport pairs shows that the airline’s median frequency is daily, which is hardly surprising: for many airlines, this is considered the minimum for competitiveness.

Routes with two or more daily flights

As shown below, American has 13 non-stop long-haul airport pairs with two or more daily services. While there may be no surprises, seeing them listed is good. Partially thanks to oneworld and transatlantic joint venture partner British Airways, London Heathrow accounts for more than half of the 13 routes.

Up To 56 Daily Flights: American Airlines, Delta & United’s Huge London Operations Examined

Despite the huge volume of services, each carrier has fewer London flights than last summer.

Nearly half of the routes have grown

Comparing July/August 2024 flights to the pre-pandemic 2019 indicates that six of the 13 routes have more flights than they did, as detailed below. As you can imagine, this has changed the order of American’s most-served long-haul routes considerably. None of the 13 have more or fewer flights than in 2023.

  • Charlotte-London Heathrow and Los Angeles-London Heathrow: from twice daily to three daily
  • Dallas/Fort Worth-Anchorage, Dallas/Fort Worth-Rome, Los Angeles-Tokyo Haneda, and Miami-London Heathrow: from daily to twice daily

While Los Angeles-Haneda flights rose to double daily, the change is only because Los Angeles-Narita ended in favor of more services to slot-constrained and heavily coveted Haneda.

American’s Dallas-Anchorage

At 2,644 nautical miles (4,897 km), Dallas/Fort Worth-Anchorage is the shortest of American’s most-served long-haul services. It is also the only airport pair operated by a narrowbody: the 196-seat A321neo.

It was flown until early January 7, 2024, and returned on March 10 with a daily service. It will double daily from Texas on June 5, precisely a week after this article was researched, ahead of the peak season. The schedule will be as follows:

  • Dallas/Fort Worth-Anchorage: 15:04-18:52 (6h 48m) and 19:12-22:01 (6h 49m)
  • Anchorage-Dallas/Fort Worth: 06:05-15:43 (6h 38m) and 20:40-06:18+1 (6h 38m)
